zander
Ehhhh, please justify that. So a tourist icon won the European cup this season, not a team of players who can play football? Big deal plenty of tourist attractions win prizes Loch Ness,Edinburgh Castle etc Link to comment
E-P-K
I'm sorry, but he could have been a legend on a par with Cantona but he's leaving aged 23 and will be remembered for a few really good seasons but that's all. He has already played more games and scored more goals for United than Cantona did. Link to comment

florin_raducioiu
He has already played more games and scored more goals for United than Cantona did. That's not my point. Do you think in ten years time they'll still be singing Ronaldo songs in the same way that they always sing Cantona songs still? I'm not so sure they will if he leaves now Link to comment

Jocky Balboa
SImilar langauge? Oh that's a great reason for moving. Portugal the speak Portoguese.Spain the speak Spanish.Portugal and spain are two completely different countries unlike scotland and england which are part of the same country. While they are 2 different countries, the languages and culture are so similar, that the differences between them are negligible. If anything, they are probably closer to each other (culturally speaking) than Scotland and England, although unlike us (for now, at least!), they retain their individual sovereignties. Therefore I can see the attraction of wanting to move somewhere closer. Mediterraneans have a different way of life than Northern Europeans and he would probably feel more settled there, although I take the other people's point about Utd. having made him the player he is today. What would I do? Well, he has probably gone as far as he can as a Utd. player and if this IS his dream move, then him wanting to go is understandable. Nevertheless, I feel this would set a bad example, not only in the way Real have approached him through the media (and - allegedly - in secret behind Fergie's back), but in the way a player can just walk out of a long-term contract, just one year after signing it. It just goes to show how little loyalty players have. Remember, this isn't the first time he's threatened to walk out, having made similar motions towards the exit door 2yrs ago after the World Cup... Link to comment

Language aint similar at all. Believe me, i can speak some spanish and im tryin to learn portuguese now and they are nothing alike. Obviously theres some basic similarities but for about 90% of the language, totally different. Culture is similar ill give you that but even attitudes of the locals is hugely different....not to mention they love eachother about as much as we love england. Link to comment

I'm not going to get into an argument about language differences on a thread about a conniving little prima donna, but I can assure you that if you look at the family tree of all the Indo-European languages, you will CLEARLY see that Spanish and Portuguese are VERY closely related, having evolved from Latin (with French, Italian and Romanian being the others) just a few Centuries after the fall of Rome. I think that's a lot more then "basic similarities" and a lot less than "totally different", but like I said, look at the timeline of Indo-European languages... The rivalry is no more than cross-border banter and while you will invariably encounter a few bampots who take it to varying degrees of zealousness, it is ultimately no more than friendly rivalry, with the Portuguese the smaller neighbours who love to get one up on their larger and more powerful neighbour (a bit like us and the English, eh? *wink*) Link to comment
robbo
i agree to an extent as i do find im pickin up portuguese quickly because i can see similarities with french but im by no means an expert on the culture aspect but im going for 3 weeks in august so ill try and find out as much as i can....from the beach that is. The rivalry i was always led to believe was quite bitter espec when you read Quieroz' reaction to madrids interest in Ronaldo. I dunno. Ronaldo is a twat. I hope he leaves then realises hes made a mistake. Link to comment
