Now Would Be A Great Time To...

Recommended Posts

I'd say many younger players read forums and websites to gauge fans opinions; generation thing. I would hope more mature players would stay away from forums as they are not places were sentiment is in abundance.

Bebo and his bird read many comments about him apparently on places like this and Twitter, but players have to cope with it now more than before. Before the internet fans really only shared views at games n pubs, now the world can see their thoughts and so can the players.

I'd say subconsciously at least, all the negative posts on forms/websites can put fans in the more negative mindset and that's transferable to the players on the pitch when things are not going well. This applies to every team, but not every team has the history we do, so our pride takes more of a beating. Just a thought though, may be well off the mark.

I think youre likely correct in thinking that the younger players read the message boards... though Aberdeen players might do well to stay far away from an Aberdeen fansite... there's not a lot of love from the fans towards the players these days, and rightly so. Most of them shouldn't be within a hundred miles of the club, and yet they're pulling on a jersey they've no right to be wearing.

If the truth hurts, or if what the nasty fans say bothers them they they need to find an alternative to the fan sites for people's opinions on them. I'm sure if they ask their mums if they're good players they'll get the answer they're looking for.

There are people out there with the mental toughness to ignore negative feedback, or better still to take it on board and work at ironing out their shortcomings. If our players don't have that mental toughness then, in my opinion, that's another reason they shouldn't be at our club. Mentally weak people don't make good footballers. Imagine if Rougvie or Miller had read the feedback about them that the current team get,... Miller would have laughed at it, Rougvie would probably have snapped a Celtic player, but one thing they wouldn't have done is cry about it as we've seen our players do in recent years.

Having said that, the feedback on Rougvie and Miller would have been positive because they knew how to play football,.

I'll do the current players a favour... if the bad mans on the internets are upsetting you, try this program...

You are correct. Mental toughness is one of the most important attributes to any sports person and these guys should rise above it. I wonder how the footballing teens of the 80's Don's sides would have coped with the internet and all that goes with it. Different breed of player back then, when playing football was about pride & winning before cash. Football back then was a way out of poverty, like it is in places like Brazil today.

Maybe because times were harder back in the 60's-80's; most players in Scotland came from the poorer cities, certainly many of Scotland's legends did not have well off families or privileged backgrounds. That would have formed a tougher street wise boy as well. The boys now live mostly a charmed life by comparison, which may over time have taken away that never say die mentality players had in the past, when sides like Aberdeen, Celtic, Rangers, D Utd ect could all handle the best in Europe.
