Poppy

What is this even supposed to mean. If you mean servicemen and woman being killed by ira bombs, the murder of innocent men and woman and children bt the same bombs, fathers, mothers, daughters, sons all being murdered, that is what it was, by cowards then i am sure that no one refuses to recognise that happened in ireland.

The IRA are / were (?) a depicable organisation, answerable to no-one. However, many innocent people have been murdered by our servicemen over the years.

Both points are absolutely true - and indeed continue to the present day but only a fool or rabid tim would suggest that that means that the maimed survivors of war and the fallen and their relatives (many a gallant Irishman too) do not merit our thoughts and respect. That the Army has done bad things and in some ways continues to do so is reprehensible and action is often taken, sometimes too little and too late but a response is there. Can the other organisations say that they are as innocent or prone to self analysis to weed out their errors and bad apples?

Anyway - I can understand those who don't wear the poppy and I certainly think in recent years we've become too precious about it, I wear it to honour those who died fighting for things we now take as granted and for those who still fight and die to keep horror away.

What is it with rangers scum and their self centered obsession with poppies, we know what they represent and we also wear them, so why do they make such a big deal about wearing them. It's almost laughable. There was even muppets in the hun end at pittodrie kissing their poppies last weekend while many people in the Aberdeen end were also wearing them. A message for all you non brainier huns out there, don't turn the poppy in to a nonsensical bigoted battle between you and Celtic, because it means a fucking hell of a lot more than that you uneducated fools. I'm sure when troops go to war, the first thing they must think is "we are doing this for the rangers". Time to draw the line, thousands of people died for this country and all we see the rangers fans doing is parading their poppies like some kind of anti Irish badge of honour.

This I have to say is really getting on my tits now. Seemed to start last year, maybe before but I wasn't aware of it, and does seem to be yet another you're with us or with them piece of nonsense from the Weegies. Bad enough as it is, but then like last year I start seeing shite like this...

So now the poppy is defiled by a Rangers badge, and this is somehow appropriatte? I fucking despair of the cesspit that Glasgow so clearly is.

I had an old ex serviceman at the door selling poppies tonight, can not recall ever having that before, don't generally wear poppies but he got a couple of quid for his causes.

They have been getting sold round houses for as long as I can remember up here. The days of that should be in the past IMO, there are an increasing number of folk who may not want poppies, and they're available all over the place.

Absolutely, my mum got landed years ago with selling them where she stays and still does it now. However, the meaning of the poppy seems to have changed as the years have gone by, and now includes wars subsequent to WW2. That rests uneasy with me.

The FA's belly-aching over poppies on their strips against Spain this weekend is getting on my tits now.

Whole-heartedly agree with FIFA on this one, I think allowing any kind of statement on international strips sets a precedent. We don't need that.

There is going to be a minute's silence before kick-off, poppies on their tracksuits before the game, and black armbands during. How many ways to do they need to 'show their respect'?

They're shouting about 'tradition'. Bollocks, I say. Seems like to me these embroidered poppy strips have emerged in the past few years, maybe someone older than me can recall - were poppies on strips in the 70s, 80s and 90s a common thing?

Of course, the right-wing media have latched onto this one with glee, "MAD FIFA BUREAUCRATS WON"T LET US BRITS DO WHATEVER WE LIKE".

I've no problem with the poppy. I detest this poppy fascism though.

playing devils advocate here with a few points but here goes

1. Why are they pushing this so much all of a sudden? whats the agenda? is a minutes silence and black arm band not enough??

2. Scotland and Wales are not pushing to get poppys on their tops and probably couldn't care less. The poppy appeal is for the british forces.

3. The poppy appeal is a charity set up by the british legion so I don't see FIFA's problem. They allowed Barca to have a chairty organisation on their top for a few years.

to sum up - a bunch of arseholes are for some reason desperate to wear shirts with poppys and a bunch of arseholes are saying no.

Dinna bother my arse wearing flowers FFS, look like a right pansy with that on, same as poofs who wear them in their shirts to weddings and stuff, get a grip.

I've no opinion on the war whatsoever and it was so long ago that it's pretty irrelevant now but I dinna grudge a few pound to some of the old stagers for whom it has meaning.

thats cause no one would invite you to a wedding.

bit of a storm in a tea cup. slow media week i think. bit like most of teh rubbish you hear in britian that isnt football related but inviolves footballers.

fifa have their rules for various reasons, which are valid, but it seems like this is a good cause.

that said if they cant wear them then as long as there is some cermonial gesture everybodys happy.

You'll look like a poppy and I'm sure you'd cut a dashing figure; however in all seriousness FIFA are 100% correct in this - there is too much mock outrage about the poppy - people need to get a grip. It is and should be entirely voluntary and anyone who is offended because someone is not wearing a poppy has serious personal issues (which I suspect includes most of the right wing press). Football is a game and in one sense should be above this. Sadly I fear we'll have a few days of soundbites from politicians and pundits happy to send folk away to war and death worrying about whether a footballer or two has a poppy on his chest for 90 minutes. It really sounds like a Python movie.

FIFA are wrong but England should just get on with it, SSN going into meltdown over it !

surely someone has to stand up at some point though? Fifa saying the refs been told to call the game off if the players wore embroidered poppys? Whats fifas problem, not getting paid for it?

The English love to dribble about FIFA injustice since they got knocked back for the World Cup.

We'll never hear the end of it, it's like 66 all over again without obviously them hosting the tournament, fixing the draw and host stadiums, or winning it with the aid of bent officials. Apart from those three things it's identical.

Fuck them.
