Who the fuck cares anyways. He said a word that consists of 6 letters, 2 of which are the same, from our alphabet that have been put in a particular order...how the fuck can that be taken as an insult ffs? It's being turned more and more into a taboo word which is being thrown around the place by Hip Hop like a Scotsman saying to a mate "Alright ye cunt", but we're told to refrain from even SAYING the word in a "someone said <insert word>" context.

Absolute shambles. The best way of killing a words effect is by saturating it so it loses it's "appeal" to racists. It's like Aberdeen fans singing "we're only sheep shagging bastards". It pretty much stops other fans singing it to us because we have taken it on the chin.

As Bobo says, very poor comparison, perhaps you should have cited the use of the word 'Yid' by Spurs fans in a way of 'reclaiming' the word. The police recently embarrassed themselves by arresting the fans who used it. Thankfully the CPS saw sense:

"We have decided that, although the same words used in other contexts could in theory satisfy the criteria for 'threatening, abusive or insulting', it is unlikely that a court would find that they were in the context of the three particular cases in question.

"We have therefore concluded that there is insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction. This decision has no bearing on any other cases that may be brought to our attention and all cases will be considered on their own facts and merits."

I assume you dont use the N word in every day speak? I agree to an extent with some of what you are saying, the word has become tabboo in almost any context. Some people physically recoil if it is even utterred in a way that some girls do if you say 'cunt' but on the other hand as you say, it is used liberally in the media, particularly the music industry, as a term of endearment.

It's ok to say the word if you are a) a rapper and b) black. If you are a middle class, middle aged, middle earth man like Clarkson, using this word will ultimately mean you are a filthy racist.

Really good Christopher Hitchens article on this...

Anyway the problem with calling someone a nigger is that blacks were discriminated against for hundreds of years. Your comparision to "sheep shaggers" is pretty moronic. The good people from Aberdeen were never slaves or had to sit on the back of the bus.

The reason black people use the word nigger is to try and take the menace out of what is a horrible racial slur. It does not mean suddenly white people can start using it. It's just such a simple act of politeness that I don't understand why people get worked up about it. Black people call each other niggers but they don't like white people calling them it. I can live with and understand that. Getting worked up about it is just silly.

Of course sheep shagger and N****** aren't comparative in terms of meaning ffs. I was just using that as a reference of a group of people taking a "slur" and using it themselves.

I never use the word, I've no reason to use the word and it's not a word that even comes into my head when I see a black person. If it IS something that pops immediately into a persons head then they are likely a) a racist or b) surrounded by racists who use the word.

You have to include ignorance also.

Plenty folk are ignorant, but not racist.

Yeah, but the words aren't exactly "everyday" language. They will have picked it up from some mouthy racist prick, possibly their parents! It is getting better. The only folk I know that would happily fire off racists slurs are the elderly.

Clarkson has proven himself to be a xenophobe over the years, if only for comedic effect.

Wouldn't like to say whether he is a racist but he definitely strikes me as being ignorant.

Nah, he knows exactly what he's doing. He's doing it for the publicity and the shock factor. It seems to work for him so far.

There is a local black family who own a carpet and furniture shop, been here for decades, and he is known as "Ali the darkie". is everyone racist who calls him by this ?

A sensible name so that he isn't confused with the corner shop owner.

When he first moved to the town, he was the only Black person staying there, so in a less PC era, with plenty ignorance, the tag of Ali the darkie stuck. and has done since.

I would say so, yes, albeit racists without malice (I presume). Culter had similar a few years ago, a local was known as 'Darkie Johnny', I think he was the only black guy in the village at the time.

Does 'Ali the Darkie' know he is called this?
