Redstar
You hear it all the time. Invariably bullshit and as transparent a justification for glory hunting as you are ever likely to hear... TOTALLY different. No it's not...AFC are a club that with the wind behind them are max 15K a week....always have been....the fact that some folk who stay in Aberdeen support the old firm has always been the case.....I think you boys have got so disillusioned you are now starting getting behind dicks like Kenny Shields simply because he is having a pop at the OF....it's fu*king poor....If AFC had a credible team we would get 15K at home games....until that happens 7 and 8K's are all that will turn up regardless of Aberdeen based OF fans Link to comment
Bobby Connor
As I said earlier would there be any weegies supporting AFC if the glorious 80's were removed from our history?I certainly can't recall any weegies in our support pre 80's maybe some older posters can tell me otherwise. Or can any weegie Dons fans on here tell me why they support AFC and not a local team ffs there are plenty to choose from between the weeg and Aberdeen, why Aberdeen? Well, they might have been glory hunters at the time, but after the past 20 years I reckon they are maybe due a bit of appreciation now. Link to comment

MD88
I'm not quite sure how it is different??....You usually find that Hun and Tim supporters in Aberdeen have a pretty strong tie with these clubs either thru father's or grandfather's....I'm pretty sure your average young lad growing up in the North East will support AFC unless he has a good reason to support either of the OF........or of course the other reason........They have been dragged along to Todders and had to sit thru the absolute shit that is on display week in week out. Could not disagree more with this statement. I'm 23 and I know heaps of folk who grew up the same time as me and supported Rangers or Celtic simply for the glory. They had no other reason to support either club other than the fact that they could associate themselves with a team who won more often than not. The very worst kind of football fan if you ask me. The sort of folk who love to have a go at dons fans, when they have never been to Ibrox or Parkheed in their life. Link to comment

Bobby Connor
Remember the bigot brothers were still bigoted back then, so as much as there might have been a degree of glory hunting towards it I'm sure it's easier to sleep at night knowing you aren't associated with either of the bigot brothers, and I get as much from the Weeg based Dons fans I know down here. Proper glory hunters would've given up long before now IMO. Exactly. Many who I went to school with now deny ever being an Aberdeen fan and claim to 'support' one of the OF teams now. Bumped into an old mate who I hadn't seen since school in the Mallard ahead of a County game about 2 years back. Me: Still following the Dons? Him: I'm a Celtic fan. Don't know where it came from (because it was without thought or any pre-meditation) but I just slapped him across the face without even thinking about it. The boy is a scaff so I was lucky not to get my head kicked in, but it was pure instinct. After that we drank some beer. Point is, there is no such thing as a glory hunting Aberdeen fan anymore. You will always get punters who go for the big glamour teams...If I'm honest and I was brought up in Motherwell or Kilmarnock chances are I would be following one of the OF......But I was brought up in Aberdeen and have always supported AFC....but what Stewart Milne has done to the club is beyond the pale.AFC supporters are loyal and If we can get a team to be proud of...the stay away fans...mainly due to Milne...will return...but lets be honest boys...that's not going to happen as long as Milne is at AFC....The prospect of ruining your Sat...and that's what it does after an afternoon at Todders...is nae a good one Link to comment

laphroaig
I grew up in Edinburgh, no connection to Aberdeen, my dad was a don with no connection to the city, he took me to my first game in early 70s, been a don ever since, both my boys r dons. Does that make us glory hunters? I think when you are taken to a game it sticks how can you change. I think my old man supported Aberdeen because he hated all the shit that went with the old firm, he had pretty much lost interest before he died a few years back, wonder why eh. Link to comment

OddJob
What I'd applaud Shiels for is the timing of it - could have said it if they lost or at a random point during the week and would've sounded bitter, but he quite clearly said it as a massive GIRFUY after they'd beaten the Huns at home for the first time in 17 years or something. Well played that man This ^^^^ And for the record a large portion of my old man's side of the family are Celtic fans but i clearly knew the score early doors. As i've said many times before i could have chosen the easy route (well ok the Dons were successful when i was a kid, but got shite whilst growing up) and supported the Septics but although it's been a long difficult time supporting the Dons, they're MY club and i wouldn't change them for anything Link to comment

Both of them born and bred Granite City with no ties whatsoever to either club, be it parent, grandparents, cousins, dogs or budgies. And his contact icon in my phonebook is a photograph of him in his red and white AFC supporting get up, Tammy inclusive, from circa 83.
