Update: Muslim Extremist Suicide Blast In Thailand Feb 15th 2012 (full story typed out below as well)

The suicide blast was heard all along Sukhumvit Soi 11 at about 2pm local time here in Bangkok, Thailand. The first news reports were from Twitter users reporting two large explosions in the area. As more information came in from local authorities it emerged that the bomber, an Iranian national named Saedi Moradi, had initially thrown a home-made grenade at a taxi after being refused a ride. The bomb rolled under the cab and fortunately the driver wasn't hurt. He fled the scene, then attempted to throw a second explosive device at some Thai police officers, in the vicinity of a school playground.

The bomb slipped from his fingers and exploded on the ground, severing both his legs. He was still alive when rushed under arrest to nearby Chulalongkorn hospital. There were no fatalities although four Thais were injured. Two Iranians are now in police custody, including an accomplice renting a house on Soi Pridi, near Phra Khanong Skytrain station.

Perhaps most surprising is that US authorities had warned the Thai government of a suspected Lebanese or Iranian terrorism plot in Bangkok some weeks ago, and Thai police even raided a property and charged a Lebanese suspect with possessing bomb-making equipment. Police captain and MP Dr. Chalerm had then pronounced the city safe. The Valentine's day bomb attempt came just 10 days after all embassies had lifted their warnings about travel to Bangkok.

Islam-related tensions are a little known but serious issue in Southern Thailand, where an Iran proxy is believed to be preaching Jihadist teachings to promote terrorism. In recent days Israeli embassies have been attacked in several countries including Georgia, believed to be revenge attacks conciding with the 4th anniversary of the assassination of Hezbollah's deputy leader. Whether central Bangkok will face more problems in the near future or whether this was the act of a lone madman, is yet to be seen.
