tutankamun
As a fan of The Smiths, I love a good lyric. Good old Mozza had a cool turn of phrase, 'hang the DJ' etc. On a par with Dylan, he knew the power of words more than most. But what is your favourite lyric? Maybe I'm biased (as I grew up with them and they were/are my favourite band) but one of my personal faves is The Roses from 'Standing Here': "I could park a juggernaut in your mouthAnd i can feel a hurricane when you shout" I just love the ambiguity of a Roses' lyrics, 'all things to all men' etc. I mean Roll on June... tutankamun
Favourite lyric and folk give us an insight to the song. 'She was getting pally with a scally in the alley giving head for gear' is a belter. Yes, Pete Doherty is another with quite a unique turn of phrase. Link to comment

tutankamun
Think these lyrics are about some mouthy bird? Thats what I think of when I hear them anyway. Correct (allegedly). I've read a lot about Roses' lyrics (or other people's interpretation of them anyway) and I've heard Ian & John discussing them on several occasions . Nothing was ever definitive though, they have contradicted themselves on the meaning of particular songs. Part of the reason I loved The Roses was that I was never entirely sure what they were even singing, never mind what they were singing about. They never printed their lyrics on the album like so many bands have done since The Beatles. Made of Stone for example, what's that all about? I guess people could take that song to mean anything they want it to. Which is part of the charm I suppose. Edit: from Wiki: John Squire said: "'Made of Stone' about making a wish and watching it happen. Like scoring a goal in a Cup final...on a Harley Electra Glide...dressed as Spider-Man". From newer stuff quite a lot of Oasis and Streets but for me Frightened Rabbit have loads such as: Keep Yourself Warm "My hole, I'll get my hole, I'll get my holeGet my hole, get my hole and I'll find out more. It's a choo-choo train, a rocket launchIf we have a hormone racei'm bound to finish first." "I'm drunk, I'm drunkAnd you're probably on pillsIf we've both got the same diseasesIt's irrelevant girl" Good Arms Vs. Bad Arms "i decided this decision some six months agoso i'll stick to my guns, but from now on it's wari am armed with the past, and the will, and a bricki might not want you back, but i want to kill him" Last line "i'm still in love with you (can't admit it yet)"Loads of others but love em basically.
