Best Scottish player of his generation. Superb professional, who by all accounts had a terrific attitude to the game. Even when he was a first pick at Man United and they were going deep in Europe, he always turned up to play for his country when selected.

Was probably my favourite Scottish player since Eion Jess. Never forget his performance for Man United at the San Siro a few years ago - was brilliant watching a Scotsman absolutely bossing a game between two European giants.

It's a shame something like this couldn't have happened to Carlos Tevez instead.

Indeed he does. Real shame for the guy like, his performance in the home game against the Czechs - even disregarding his goal - was brilliant. Lead by example. Hope he does make a comeback :crossfingers:

He actually looks like he's put on a bit of weight (in the face) but then that's probably cos he'll be getting treated with steroids for the condition & this will be one of the reasons he basically had to say he cannot play again this season.

Once he gets it under control & manageable without the steroids, he'll be able to play again but will be making a lot of toilet trips.

As far as I can gather his condition is curable with surgery...

...so, yeah.

Aye but to do that he has to get his colon removed (or partially at least) & replaced with a bag, so if he has to go down that route, then his playing days are in fact over.

I think (& hope) he'll be back next season. :crossfingers:

Sadly very true all of that

Not true.

I have a fairly acute case of UC. Nearly ten years ago, the drugs were not working for me (although they do work beautifully for most sufferers and would certainly not prevent a football career imho, nor unlimited toilet trips) and I had my entire colon and rectum removed. The doctor formed a replacement colon/rectum using what is called a J-pouch, which is made entirely from my small intestine tissue. I required a bag for 6 weeks between the two ops and then it was removed once the new pouch inside me had healed. I go to the toilet in the usual way and there is almost nothing i cannot do (eating peanuts is a challenge!). I have great scars. I am not aware of anything which would prevent someone having a football career even after this big op. (I have inexplicably never been scouted at five a sides and remain shocked at my lack of international call-up).

He is obviously not well and is in the midst of a flare-up but I would be very surprised if he is not back playing for Man Utd and Scotland soon.

Get well soon Darren, Scotland's finest for years.

The drugs would prevent him playing football for the simple reason that they would be considered a banned substance :dontknow:

& as for the post op, & having a bag. Well at a guess it would be extremely difficult to perform to the level required to be a professional footballer, so this is why I said his playing career would be over.

I know a little about it myself because my sister has it as well & although she's not a professional footballer, she is a nurse, so it hasn't really affected her career much, other than the fact that she is only supposed to work day shift (but she still gets night shifts cos of lack of staff) because of the obvious reasons, like regularity for the toilet.

I did say that I believe he'll be playing again next season but if he does require the operation, then the time out to have the op & heal etc. would effectively put an end to his playing days but even after he's recovered, I'd imagine that he'd certainly not be capable of performing to the required standards of a pro footballer.

Also it is often treated with steroids, which would NOT be permitted in football (regardless of the justification of use) & this is likely the main reason that he's not playing right now, along with the fact that he's got to come to terms with the illness & basically become used to it.

Looking at him, he certainly looks a lot fuller in the face, where as normally he's always looked skinny & this would suggest to me that he is being treated with the steroid treatment for the moment :dontknow:

I'm certainly no expert because like I say I only have info from my sister & take an interest as I have stomach problems with ulcers & my grandfather also had the same problems along with a few other family members. I don't claim to know more than you on UC (far from it) I just commented on what I thought I may have a slight understanding of.

For you to say what I said was "not true" is maybe a little bit derogatory, as if you read what I said, it does in fact make sense & you may have misunderstood what I was saying & taken it a little personal because you are a sufferer & got a blinkered view of what I said :dontknow:

Fair point and apologies for any offence - I am certainly no expert either and can only go on my own experience.

Steve Redgrave and Lewis Moody both have UC (not sure if as serious as Darren) and they will both need to be fitter and train more intensely than the average footballer i would think. I do also think that I would be able to play sport at a senior level (if I was in any way good enough!) - I do not believe my new make-up would hinder me.

I am surprised that steroids are a banned substance even when their use can be justified on medical grounds - sadly the cheats must have driven sports authorities to this overkill position. I would like to think that a solution could be found to that issue if such a high profile player's career was going to be ended on the basis of a technicality.

No offence taken mate.

Have Redgrave & Moody had the op to replace their colons whilst they were competing? Impressive if so.

My sister basically has a card to say that she can demand the use of any shop or such likes toilet if she needs it, if she has to go then she is in great pain if she has to hold it in.
