Young loons who are out of control get steered towards a career in the forces, ostensibly to teach them 'discipline'.

Which usually comes in the form of a 'good kicking' from someone much bigger, older, and scarier.

Possible sodomisation too.

Then they get filled with mind bending drugs and get dropped off in downtown Baghdad, armed to the teeth, ready for 'action'.

Character building stuff.

some folk on here showing their ignorance. marines are a part of the navy for one.

the army gets most of its recruits from high unemployment areas, who, like me felt it was a way out of an endless circle.

i have gained numerous friends and will be coming up for a reunion in turriff in july.

feel free to attend and call these guys dafties/baby killers but bring a mate to drive you to the nearest hospital

Bollocks.

not bollocks at all. look at the States where the cost of attending university can be prohibitive for many families. Here's a sampling of some of the less expensive universities in the states (tuition fees only, per year, in US$).

University Of Texas at Dallas 15500(Out-of-State), 8500(In-state)

NJIT 20500(Out-of-State), 14000(In-State)

Arizona State University 21000(Out-of-State), 8000(In-State)

University of Arizona 20000 (Out-of-State), 6500 (In-State)

University at Buffalo - SUNY 13000(Out-of-State), 8500(In-state)

Ohio State University 26000(Out-of-State), 11000(In-State)

University of South California 26000

University of Cincinnati 24000(Out-of-State), 14000(In-State)

University of Illinois, Chicago 27000(Out-of-State), 15000 (In-State)

University of Florida 24000(Out-of-State),8500(In-State)

University of Utah 14000(Out-of-State),4000(In-State)

University of Houston 10000 (out-of-state), 5000(In-State)

University of North Carolina Charlotte 15500(Out-of-State),5000(In-State)

The same's true of Canada. So given that tuition assistance programs exist if you serve, a lot do. And then move onto the private sector when their compulsory service is finished.

Violent radges too, especially when they're out in numbers.

All swept under a big post traumatic stress disorder carpet of course, it's the innocent civilians of this country who have to put up with these cunts and their flashbacks on a day to day basis.

Eh'd rather have a huge student loan than be debt free and have my heid blown off.

i would too. but others may not feel the same way.

and it's employment for those coming from areas where there aren't any/many job opportunities.

EDIT: and student loan? only if your family earns little enough to qualify for them. if you've a regular middle-class family, you'll have to fund it through savings or a regular bank loan at regular interest rates.

I presumed you were on about the UK with regards to a degree qualification.

That's a whole different ball game in the US.

we had student doctors, engineers all sorts attatched to us. They attended university year round then during the school hols were sent to a unit to get the experience in the field.

After they had completed the uni degrees they had to spent either 2/3 years working for the forces. which for a doctor was acting like a gp. they missed the rotations in hospitals and felt they were far better equipt to take on there roles.

before Scotland brought out the free uni places a lot of people got there training this way. no debt mountain to face when uni is complete. bargain id say

not just the US though.. other countries too. in the UK, while it may not be tuition driving recruitment, it may well be other factors that attract bright people (like high unemployment). so to say they're all just daft, is a disservice i think. it's people making the best of what choices they see as being available to them.

but i'll give you some are daft. just as in any segment of society. used as human shields for the better trained and brighter ones, i've always thought. :(

personally if i was skint, i'd just go and be a street soldier and sell drugs.

its more glamorous, getter better pay and its far easier to rise through the ranks without having to deal with class snobbery from snooty officers.

Point keeps getting proved  What snooty officers do you know?

Not interest in joining the armed forces and no fuck all about them but isn't it not the most class entrenched organisation we have, i.e. the working class numpties that cause carnage in schools doing their best to fuck up the education of others put on the front line whilst the Sandhurst officers command and control.

Just wandering what it's like. I think my knowledge extends as far as Gary Tank Commander and to be honest if it is like that then it sounds like a right laugh.
