Where Can/should We Aim To Finish In The Spl Next Year?

Recommended Posts

So, with the Zombie Huns out of the SPL picture, Hearts making changes and the others cutting finances to accommodate for the loss of income in games Vs. the old Orcs, what do you think our prospects are for the new league season?

Is it wishful thinking to think that, with the major Boardroom changes, our playing budget will be relatively similar to the last 2 years and that with the likes of Hayes coming in and the youngsters being a year further on, we can at least aim for Europe? 2nd place may be stretching it with the too-cautious Brown in charge, but how about the Cups?

Let us know your thoughts...

Top of the league! Celtic will be rattled with a galvanized league ready to knock them off their perch, I see no reason right now why we can't. May as well think positive(cue HIV jokes no doubt) and hope the players and staff at the club are saying the same thing to each other.

Few more solid signings like Hayes will get optimism growing even more for this team now.

i dina care how stupid it sounds but if wer aimin for anythin other than 2nd then we deserve fuck all! obviously we wina finish first so gotta be realistic but i definately think 2nd is a realistic aim, almost every other team will be feelin they have a chance to grab that 2nd spot. so we should be aimin for nuhin less than......top 6  nah seriously, for me we can finish 2nd and thats what we should be aimin for.

Good point. I don't think Celtic will run away with it by as much as the weegia tell us they will. I can see more teams being up for it against them now there's only one ugly sister to beat. Having said that, much of the rest will all be of a similar standard to each other so will possibly cut each others throats.

It's too early to be making predictions of where we'll finish. We need to see who else we and everyone else signs before we can do that, but obviously my wish would be for us to win the league. I'll settle for a cup though :thumbup1:

I've a sneaky suspicion we can manage a cheeky 7th, with a spadeful of luck... but I think 9th is probably more likely.

I'll say 9th.

...Oh, and no finals. I'd say a quarter final and a 3rd round exit.

9th place team with handful of first team players leaving and as yet 1 player in doesn't fill me with confidence but too early to say as squad wont be finalised for good while yet (August 31st well into season if past experience anything to go by). Certainly need quite a few new players in but suspect this wont be the case.

This is my thoughts.

All this exultation about getting one guy who played for Caley, after weeks of the guy's agent undoubtedly trying to find another club... doesn't exactly have me cumming in my pants with anticipation. From what I can gather he's decent.., also

Same manager.

Same Stewart Milne at the top.

Same lack of investment.

Same lack of vision.

Manager prepping the fans for very few signings by saying, "We've some (6?) great youngsters ready come through.

Season 2009-10: 9th place

Season 2010-11: 9th place

Season 2011-12: 9th place

Now some people might call me saying, "probably 9th", they might get a little bit weepy and say, "You're a bad man. You're just being negative."

Well, no, I'm basing my opinion on what's gone before and what's going on now, rather than on wishful thinking, magic beans, and the erroneous assumption that signing Jonny Hayes from Inverness is going to make us a top 6 team and win us a cup.

We've been 9th place pish for the last few years, and nothing that has happened makes me think we've improved.

If we sign a few more QUALITY players... and we won't... then I might change my mind.

Surely a question to ask at the end of the transfer window in August once all teams including us have concluded their transfer business?

No harm asking it now, on the understanding that should the club spring the surprise signings of Messi, Ronaldo and Buffon, we can always revise our current thoughts.

Jonny Hayes likely isn't going to fall into the category of influential world class maestro who can significantly improve our team's fortunes, though, hence 9th imo, as things stand.

Very good point, but I wanted to gauge opinions on fans' current expectations of what we CAN achieve, rather than focus purely on current resources (which are admittedly some way off European standard as of yet). Basically, what I'm asking people to consider is that if we weigh up our current squad and the budget Brown and Knox have to improve it, then look at how other clubs in the SPL are streamlining their business to accommodate the absence of the Orcs, where/what is a realistic target to aim for...

As said above, Celtic will win the title barring a miracle. However, they are not strong enough to expect the treble and do well in Europe and are thus very beatable in the Cups. If Kilmarnock can win a trophy on a smaller budget than us, after all... 2nd place is attainable from at least 4 clubs, too.

As for actual predictions, that is indeed too early to call, at least until the end of the transfer window/start of season. Depending on who we bring in and who others lose, we could end up anywhere from 2nd to 10th, as it stands. Hayes is a good signing and should help Vernon no end, BUT one signing will not make us a European qualifying, trophy-winning side overnight, as I'm acutely aware. We need at least 3 more signings of his calibre before I will be convinced we have a squad capable of such things.

We shall see...

Top 4 would be a good season , 2 good cup runs with 1 reaching the final :trophy::scarf:

Agree. Won't happen though. I reckon if we get into the top 6 we will be lucky. I think 8th.

Interesting comments from Brown on radio talking about Hayes signing saying we will attempt to take in more players but if we don't manage Hayes alone will significantly improve us.

I agree with him. Gives us something we sorely lacked last season.

Absolutely. But our squad is going to be much much weaker overall. Once again, and probably even moreso this season, any kind of injury problems and we will be in trouble.

We should win the league. Need to spend some money first but not as much as we'd have to spend previously.

Couple of players in defence, midfield (wide) and a striker for Vernon to play beside and it's there for the taking.

if montpellier can win the french league, we can win the scottish. pawlett and hayes remaining fit and being played wide all season is key, as is signing a partner for vernon. as optimistic as i am about the season after signing hayes and rangers nae being there i can't help but remain depressed at the thought of craig brown leading the team into this exciting new dawn.
