One Up

Suprised they have lasted this long to be honest. I used to be a regular in there but hardly ever in now due to downloading a'thing.

Would be a shame to see them go though.

Same with me. When I was a student I spent quite a bit of time in there. However now I can download an album quite cheaply off of Amazon and have that on my mp3 player/phone within couple of minutes. Sadly it seems that places like One Up just aren't up to the task of delivering media to the consumers now. Even the big players are struggling HMV are probably the only major chain left in Aberdeen that you could compare to One Up in terms of products etc.

i used to go in once or twice a week, always liked how there was room to move about and take your time, unlike HMV

i havnt bought music in ages, im a bit out of touch with it all.

I'm the same though, in fact i think the last album i bought from there - and in general - was Oasis' last album.

I still like to purchase cds, and more often than not I will go for a rake round One Up. Sometimes go to HMV if I wanting something specific and it ain't at One Up. Generally don't actually have any idea what I am going to buy when I go in, just like to have a rake and see what I can find.

The last few times I have been in, you'd be lucky if there were 3 or 4 customers in the place and the last time I was in, I was raking for a good 20 minutes and not one other person actually bought anything while I was in.

Downloads and online sales make it so difficult though.

K.

He's a fool.

Good een. I was just being honest. The odd occasion I do buy i hard copy of an album I make the effort to go there rather than HMV.

But i don't think anyone buys as much albums today as they did 10, 15 20, whatever years ago.

I'm not just going to plough hundreds / thousands of pounds into a business when I have other more important things to pay for.

I would be sad to see them go as i grew up buying music from them and it's never good to see a local business go under and people out of work.

I dread to think of how many porn shops have gone out of business due to my pesky downloading and streaming. How will I ever sleep tonight?

Yep that's the bottom line. Coupled with most folk tightening their belts over the last few years.

They've done well to out-last Fopp and Virgin / Zavvi.

I thought I read this exact story years ago.... "Buy my shit," says dude who owns local record shop, "or I could go out of business."

I bought plenty shit from One Up in my time, including a coke-caked Sid Sings LP, and I have to say... change your business model if the current model isn't working.

just saying, "Buy my shit" to the local rag on a periodic basis isn't much of a model.

Once I tunes came out I lost interest in music, think half the fun was waiting for a cd to come out.

Last one for me was tom petty, not been in there in a couple of years now

Aye but have you heard some of the shite that's getting bandied about nowadays though? I'm nae surprised you listen to classic musicians like Petty as they will never get boring

Aye..." the good old days may not return...and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn"

Aye, was going to say similar. Seems a strange approach to take, nae many businesses will do all that well of telling the world that "they are about to go bust." Won't get much in the way of a credit line etc. I'd imagine the position ain't as bad as made out, but probably suffering a bit, hence a plea for help.

Not too sure about how a local record shop goes about changing its business model to compete with offshore online retailers or digital downloads. I guess they try and avoid too much commercalisation in One Up (i.e. no prominent space for the shite filling the charts just now), so they could try and change that, but then I'd say that is probably the domain of the single and the download, so would probably make little difference.

One Up is effectively filling a gap in the market in Aberdeen that only HMV can compete with (and perhaps some of the supermarkets, but again, mostly chart in supermarkets), it is just a market getting smaller and smaller.

I guess the occassional sob story is one of the few ways remaining to perhaps tempt people back through the doors.

There's probably a market for rare and collectible Vinyl, CDs and assorted paraphernalia. If he has to close his bricks and mortar and start selling online out of his house or a garage then so be it... you free up your ground rent. I would imagine the owner of One Up is fairly knowledgeable about what is and isn't a good line in collectible.

One Up isn't a building, it's the guy's business... and he already has inventory. Close the building and get someone to build a website.

I rather suspect this is a fairly cheap advertising ploy.

Would be interesting to see what his rent is on Belmont Street. Fairly central location like that, reasonable size, think it could be quite hefty.

That is something that he could work on as an aside to what he has on the go anyway. The website they have just now is pretty poor, with absolutely no e-commerce element to it at all.

It still ends the ability to go in and explore. There is still a market for it but dwindling. Same with bookshops.

I've heard coming down, is the hardest thing :)

15th October Jake Buggs debut album comes out. Get on that.

It's a clash between Arctic Monkeys and Dylan.

A good friend of mine got paid off from one up a couple weeks back. He is well into his music and knew my taste well so he'd always keep new albums behind the counter that he thought I'd like. I'd be in once a week to collect them and concert tickets if anything was coming up.

Feel sorry for Fred he's a nice guy. Unfortunately Apple/iTunes and the internet in general is fucking another local shop over. The Supply Chain version of the nazi's if you ask me, power hungry fucks trying to take over the world.

Decent i'll pick it up when it comes out.

Aye its a bit rubbish like, Itunes have totally cornered the market. Even the radio stations are to blame i mean how many times a day do northsound play that little mix song, any decent song that does come out is overplayed in the first week and i get so bored of it.
