Peter Weir's Heid

Recommended Posts

For anyone who isn't old enough to remember how good Peter Weir was. Check out how much Smeltic fans laud Danny McGrain. He will be in their greatest XI every time. Many stick him in the all time great Scotland teams too. Peter Weir tormented that man and turned him inside out time and again. Was probably responsible for "Fanny McGrain" retiring a year earlier than initially planned.

Before Peter Weir The Dons had a decent left winger called Ian Scanlon - the likes of which we would be chuffed with now. Since Peter Weir we haven't had a player of his standard.

Just Youtube Aberdeen v Ipswich to see him ripping then Bobby Robson inspired UEFA Cup holders a new one. Probably my 2nd all time favourite game at Pittodrie. The ghost of England full back Mick Mills is still to be seen untying the knot that Weir put him in. Cannot believe he only got about 6 caps or something like that. Also credit due as he was a weedgie that grew up supporting the Dons

As for that hair St Mirren had some affa doo's fae that period, Frank MacAvennie, Billy Abercromby and Tony Fitzpatrick. Fergie obviously was still perfecting his horrible bastard persona

Thing is I don't recall Weir as particularly tricky in a Ronaldo kind of a way, he just hit the byline and crossed time and time and time again*. Stunningly effective player and seemed to relish the better full backs for the challenge, which as above, he won more often than not. Unfortunate he came to prominence at the same time as a horrible bigoted wife beating but undoubtedly talented left footer down Ibrox way. I wonder what ever happened to him, and his team?

Scanlon on the other hand still has the bar level for outstanding all over facial hair.

* thinking back for all you young uns out there (I saw the Glass comment). Put it this way. Weir got the ball and four Dons hot paced it to the box EXPECTING the cross. Can you say the same for any aberdeen winger since?

A bit like if a striker gets the ball anywhere in our half at present. What do you expect - a goal, a Langfield f*ckup, both? Well if a striker got past Miller and McLeish (usually McCoist being offside) we still EXPECTED Leighton to make the save.

Weir came to prominence at the same time as Cooper, as you say, but also at a time when John Robertson was winning European cups with Forest.

Neither of whom, in my opinion, were fit to lace Weirs' copa mundials

Good shout, I forgot all about Robertson. Clearly I haven't listened to a wavering John Gordon Sinclair 45' for a while, thankfully.

I was probably thinking more 86 world cup, not 82. Have to go and check my Fergie autobiography to see what the crack was. I do remember him saying he felt pressured that he was too reliant on his Aberdeen team for personnel - Graham Sharp being the main beneficiary in front of Archibald as I recall with the Liverpool contingent causing problems also.
