Times They Are A-Changin

Seem to be living in a time of massive change... I just wonder if it was always this way or if the onset of technology, particularly in the last decade or two, is accelerating the speed that society changes?

I used to haunt book stores every chance I got, but in the last few years all but one of the major booksellers (Barnes and Noble) have closed down and left nothing but empty space.

When I was a kid I had a library card, and just last year we had to vote as to whether or not to even keep our local library open.

High street stores are starting to shut up shop because you can get whatever you want just mailed to your house. The traditional city center, where you met your mates and went for a coffee, or shoplifting, or to Bed, Bath and Beyond, I don't know, are migrating into covered Malls.

Even little things seem to be changing... the loon found an old VHS tape in the basement. "What's this?" he asks, poking at it confusedly.

He brought home marked schoolwork. The only thing he failed on was writing 'Television'. He thought it was a microwave, because he had no idea THIS...

...was what tellies used to look like. I still don't think he's convinced. Tried explaining that you had to physically go over to the TV and push a button if you wanted to turn it on or off, or change channels... he cracked up at that.

I'm guessing when I'm old and incontinent, I'll be looked after by faceless robots at whatever retirement home I end up in. Presumably these machines will replace the staff who currently work there, but can still be programmed to feed me applesauce, change my pissy man-nappies, rifle through my stuff, steal my valuables, and rape me when I'm medicated.

...so I guess there's worse to come in that respect.

We've grown up with these changes Kelt and some of the stuff on the go now even has me, a pretty tech savvy thirtysomething a little baffled and asking what is the fucking point of that!?! Things like spotify, what the fuck is that all about? My sis, whos 24 was all - you know like, its for making up playlists like and you like share them with all your friends like and you like can listen to then wherever you like like.

Its all about telling every fucker when, where, how, what and who you are up to and exactly when you're doing it.

Just think how yer ma or grunny feels... My gran calls mobiles machines and gets really confused when she sees a photo on one.

I can put together a PC in the dark, troubleshoot, network and, at one time, could even code... I've had people come up to me on site and ask if I can fix/troubleshoot their tablet or some other mobile device and I have to tell them there's a good chance I wouldn't even know how to turn the thing on. In twenty years I think my skillset will be as relevant to technology as Stone Age axe-making is to modern precision tools. Desktop computers will be gone, tablets will be at people's desks where now there are dumb terminals, and data will be stored in servers somewhere offshore.

Realistically the technology to do that is already 10 years old, but various non-technological reasons mean we'll see the old dumb terminal dominating offices for the next ten years.

Don't be afraid of Technology.

My work will hold on to desktop pcs for as long as is possible, we are still using Internet explorer 5 or 6, crashes on just about every site. It was only last year they upgraded the ram on our computers, what with having 8 different programmes fighting for memory, the old 250kbs were not cutting it

Strangely, I was looking for a thread on IE11, to see if anyone has been using it. I haven't used IE in about 10 years, preferring browsers that aren't fucking shite. Just a quirk of mine.

I've heard a lot of fanfare about how IE11 promises to be a lot less shite than all other IE browsers of recent years, and it's maybe just possible that Microsoft have finally realized that I don't want a browser loaded with shite, and spyware, and adware, and then billion other bloatware programs that do nothing but slow the whole internets experience down to how it must have been in the 1300s.

So I've installed it, I'm using it, and so far so-so.

Is it faster as Microsoft claims its 30% faster than other browsers

http://www.businessinsider.com/ie-11-is-30-faster-microsoft-says-2013-9

personally i use firefox or chrome last year when firefox had a few issues

It's pretty fast and not too bogged down with shit. In fact first impressions makes it look and feel like Chrome.

Had a couple of pop-ups already tho.... have to see about that.

EDIT: Seriously?

The scroll bar is practically invisible, meaning you've no way of knowing where you are on the page.

Clever bastards.

I think that some things are changing but that 'old' things are what still drives us. For instance, I used to work in financial sales. I had a great product but not everyone bought it...mostly because they had a longer term relationship with a different sales guy. So, I think relationships are important.

I find it interesting that 'analogue' things like music are still popular. That you can have 4 dudes (or wifies) banging drums or strumming a guitar and singing and people go crazy over it tells me that nothing has really changed.

Well, I think there are certain things we're predisposed towards just on a genetic level, so things like banging drums will get us jumping around, and the screech of a hungry T-Rex will have us running in the opposite direction before our conscious brain even kicks in and explains to us that the reason we're barrelling away at forty miles an hour is because a giant lizard wants to eat us.

We'll always get hungry, we'll always get thirsty, we'll always get horny, angry, lonely, happy or scared... what will change over time are the means by which those imperatives are aroused or satisfied.

For example, I like music, but if I have a choice of seeing PIL or some monkey-people battering skulls with sticks in order to hear that music, I'm picking PIL... because music has changed since the first instances of music appeared.

If I want to surf the Internet, as it turns out, if it was 1995 I'd do it using Internet Explorer... today I'd use Chrome, because even now, almost 20 years later, Microsoft still haven't figured out that an invisible fucking scrollbar is no use to anyone.

Seriously, 20 fucking years and they still haven't figured that out.

Smart post...the things that move people will never change.

There has never been a time to live like now, its incredible. The rate of change in technology and society is baffling like some sort of genie has been let out of the bottle. Put against the history of world, its even more amazing (below) The Roman Empire started and finished with less technological advancement in 500 years than we have made in the last 5. The world is literally changing before your eyes. I wonder if social commentators can keep up

I've seen films where humans fight dinosaurs, so that clock can't be right.
