Big Man
Apparently this means different things to different people. Who knew... Anyway if someone sais to you that they'll meet you in the office ''at the back of five'' - what time do you expect them to turn up? 1 4 Link to comment
minijc
After 5 and before 6, simple. 1 Link to comment
E-P-K
Some North East fishing toons from years gone by, if you said half 5, you would mean 4:30. This is how it still is in Norway and Denmark, so if you mean to say 5:30, make sure you say half past 5, or five thirty, but not half 5... Link to comment

The Boofon
Evening... Anything up to 1710 hours is the back of 5. 1710 hours then becomes 10 past 5 and the back of 5 stops until 0501. Oh and if you were meeting someone at the back of 5 this evening then you're late. Link to comment
dj_bollocks
Logically you would think the back of five would be just before 5 ie behind 5 on an analog clock... But clearly it's not... Link to comment
Sheeptastic
I would say between 5 and quarter past. Stupid way of saying the time anyway. Link to comment

tup
I use this phrase a lot, especially if it's for something I don't really want to be attending. Cuts yersel a massive amount of slack. The back of 5 can then be up to about 20 to 6 in my opinion. I was meant to be at the Hawthorn at 'the back of 5'. In reality, I never even turned up! Classic phrase. Link to comment
