Aberdeen Airport

It's a start, but from the plans fuck knows what they're actually doing.

(1) Security is shite.

(3) The departure lounge is too small and has no facilities.

International arrivals is a joke.

(2) The domestic baggage reclaim is terrible

Other than that though, ABZ is alright.

3 out of 4 aint bad dave_min min (from another source):

Aberdeen international Airport has unveiled plans for a £13m redevelopment of its main terminal building to provide (1) a new security area, (2) expanded baggage reclaim and (3) additional shops and restaurants.

Better off spending the 13m on a new, larger runway that faces a direction larger planes can land and take off from and that doesnt mean the flights we have now are mostly landing in cross winds.

Having a larger runway would also give boof the better destinations he's asking for. The reason so many flights only go to Heathrow, Frankfurt and Amsterdam before we have to change is because of the size limitation on planes landing and taking off from Aberdeen and this is down to the small runway and the direction it faces.

Still if the improvements mean I can check in quicker and get through the security checks quicker then its still a nice step forward. All they have to do now is get rid of all the fucking job worth bumpkins from the sticks and replace them with people that smile and dont answer questions with questions and people might actually feel welcome when they arrive.

Where exactly are these planes flying to from our new longer runway?

Places in the US like New York, Chicago, Huston and then the oil flights to places like Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Oman, Baku...

Plenty of places to fly to that would be well used and profitable for the airlines and would save travellers hours of hanging around in Schiphol, CDG and Heathrow.

Despite the oil connections, there is no justification for those sort of routes. There are far too few people in the NE. A weekly flight might be about justifiable but no company will wait a week to send someone somewhere.

Baku used to be served direct form Aberdeen, and Celtic flew direct to Kazakhstan from Aberdeen earlier this season so these services are already possible with the current runway, there's just (quite clearly) no demand for a scheduled service.

If some Oil Executive wants to fly to Lagos and doesn't want to connect in one of the major hubs, then they use a private jet.

As for the US? Good one. Which of the major airlines is gonna take passengers off one of their major Hub to Hub routes by putting on an Aberdeen service?

Compare prices for going direct from Edinburgh/Glasgow to New York with going via one of the Hubs for an idea of just how expensive a direct service would be.

It's just not going to happen.

I'd say the direct to Oslo was long overdue but I agree that there's probably not enough bodies for a Houston or Luanda.

The Subsea and Drilling crew on our vessel are pretty much Scottish but hardly any are from Aberdeen.

From Dundee South I know I'd rather hop to one of the hubs than fuck about coming up to Aberdeen.

SAS are coming onto the Oslo route too early next year

Look alright

Although, they appear to have lost both the Bar and the BA/Servisair Lounges.

That and the BA plane is sitting at the International side.

Thomas Cook have too many Check-in desks.

I'm worried that the plane that's froze in mid air might crash. I've looked at it twice now and it's still there.

I just flew in from Kiev via Schipol tonight...had to que for half an hour for a taxi (5 o'clock pm)...the driver couldn't take a card and mumbled about a software upgrade,an excuse I've heard multiple times...it's a fucking disgrace that these ComCab (Chinese owned) cunts are allowed to serve a supposed International Airport...beyond embarrassing.

You in the know ?

I see a service will be starting to Gdansk from Aberdeen later this year.

That should prove popular.

Nae really, I use this new 'Twitter' thing though.

Was hoping for a £50 weekend away, but couldn't see any (acceptable) flight combination for less than £150.

Details of a £20m redevelopment of Aberdeen International Airport are being set out.

The programme is aimed at creating the largest transformation of the airport since the current terminal first opened its doors in 1977.
It will include new passenger and baggage areas aimed at coping with increasing passenger numbers.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed the investment by the airport's operators.
Meanwhile, Ms Sturgeon was also announcing that the Scottish government is setting up a new £12m fund to help people who face losing their jobs in oil and gas to gain new skills and find new work.
The airport plans will see a 50% increase in the size of the terminal building.
She told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme: "What will be announced today is a £20m package of investment to expand the terminal at Aberdeen Airport, to improve passenger facilities, to improve baggage handling facilities.
"Obviously this is investment that is very important and very welcome for the fabric of Aberdeen airport.
"I think it is investment that is well-timed because, not withstanding the difficulties the oil industry is facing now, the difficulties therefore the north east economy is facing, this is a huge vote of confidence in the future of this part of Scotland so it's very welcome indeed."
Carol Benzie, managing director of Aberdeen International Airport, said: "Not only does this investment represent the most significant upgrade to the airport since the current terminal first opened in 1977, it demonstrates our commitment to providing passengers with high quality
facilities.
"We have long recognised the need to expand the terminal and we are doing so with the long term future of the airport in mind."
James Bream, research and policy director at Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, said: "The investment is fantastic news for Aberdeen International Airport and its customers.
"The airport is our gateway to regional and international markets and the ambitious development plans are fitting for a globally significant city."
