Footballers Of Yesteryear That Never Fulfilled Thier Potential

Recommended Posts

Peter Weir.

Greatest player I've ever seen in the flesh, could go by a defender like they weren't there. Robbed by being a victim of brutal tackles from people who couldn't cope with him, should still have got way more Scotland caps though.

I'm not being biased here, I would say the same if he played for someone else.

Neil Simpson.

Which non British players of the past lit up their club or national sides but never went on to achieve the greatness predicted of them.

Bryan Roy.

Dragan Stojkovic

Enzo Scifo

Those three immediately spring to mind.

Karel Poborskiy - Looked brilliant during Euro 96, but never came close to repeating those heroics thereafter.

Ahmed Mido is another one that springs to mind. I remember watching him on TV for Ajax and thinking 'who the hell is this guy?' Unbelievable technique and quickness for such a big unit. He would have been about 18 or 19 at that stage and he was already built like a brick shithouse... I thought he'd become a superstar. No question.

How can you include him?

2 x Champions League winner (Real Madrid)

1 x World Cup winner

1 x European Championships winner

Over 50 caps for arguably the best French team in history.

That's a pretty good CV.

When he burst onto the scene he was hyped to be the next big thing, about to be the best player in the world. I have a magazine for Euro 96 somewhere where he is picked out as the French teams star player, ahead of Zidane.

He has a world cup winners medal, but then so does Stephane Guivarch. He only played once at Euro 2000. He never got on the pitch for second Champions League final and then left to go to Middlesborough, where he was a flop.

(Crackin wife though admittedly...)

You are comparing him with one of the greats of all time there! If his world cup medal was a one-off like Stephane Guivarch then I'd maybe understand your point, however he was consistent over a long period of time. Playing a major role in some great club and international sides over the years and he has a pretty enviable trophy cabinet to boot!

I actually thought you might have been fishing when you listed him along with Adu and De La Pena. De La Pena, incidentally, was a great example. He looked like an amazing prospect when he first started out.

It came good for De La Pena in the end. No, he never fulfilled his early potential due to injuries and an immature attitude. What a player he'd be in the Barca team of the last 5 or 6 yrs though. Mido for example just completely wasted his career after early promise. I'm not convinced that Freddy Adu ever had the promise that people suggest. Karembeu was a good player in an up and coming, yet still fairly average, French side of the mid 90s but whether he was ever likely to be as good as Deschamps, Petit or Zidane is debatable. He had a good career, that's for sure, won alot of honours.

Paulo Futre. At the end of the 80s, this guy blazed onto the scene after helping Porto to the European Cup.

Gheorghe Hagi. Had the talent, played for some of the big teams, but did he really reach the heights he should've?

Robert Prosinecki. Similar to Hagi.

Freddy Adu was never a player, it was just Football Manager that he made his name.

Juan Sebastian Veron within English football anyways.

Could you potentially class Nicolas Anelka as one? He was incredible talent but never really went to the next level that many expected him to go.

Denilson. Wasn't he signed for 22 million at one point, most expensive signing ever, and he did very little.

Players from much more recently whatever happened to:

Cherno Samba

Fernando Gago

Ricardo Quaresma

Denilson has to be up there, great shout.

Recently? Hyped up on Championship Manager 01-02 and never reached anything like the level predicted.
