about time too.

I love the Tories sometimes. Labour would be increasing their benefits and saying 'oooh what a shame'

shame its a bbc link as there's no user comments. They only allow comments on boring stories and then completely over-moderate it anyway. I got a comment removed on an independence article for saying Aberdeen never got any money spent on it compared to Edinburgh and Glasgow. I complained and got told it wasn't relevant. WTF? Apart from it certainly IS relevant, who are they to be hovvering over user comments with an over zealous 'delete' button?

I have an auto-spell check. Live with it.

Benefits are earned benefits that you paid into whilst working. You delayed consumption of that money in case you needed it in the event of becoming unemployed. You earned them and should not have to work for them.

Then scrap benefits and cut taxes! Solves all problems.

What are you on about min?

This is going to be able-to-work, but long out of work people. They will be getting a benefit called Job Seekers Allowance, and the main criteria to be eligible for this, is that you should be actively looking for a job. If you are in such a boat, and you are long time unemployed, you should be jumping at the chance to get some form of work placement to enhance skills and show employability. If you look beyond the headlines there are 3 options anyway:

"To still qualify for jobseeker's allowance they will have three options - work placements, such as cleaning up litter; daily visits to a job centre; or taking part in compulsory training, for example, to improve their literacy."

The nature of the people this is aimed at would clearly be the Spud's of the world, those who do the bare minimum to qualify for the benefits in question but really have no appetite to get in to work. If you're unwilling to take on compulsory training (which comes at a price to someone and it won't be them), then you should be forced to do something to earn the benefit.

Less than 1% of benefit claimants have never worked. Most benefit claimants are short term unemployed who have earned those benefits through paying taxes. This is a sledgehammer to crack a nut that doesn't exist.

It probably wont save any money, and may up even actually costing money to enforce and police.

The message it sends to lazy f4ckers is where the value in the policy lies, you don't get benefit anymore if you're capable of working but choose not to. Where's the problem there?

As dayts has already intimated, might be worthwhile reading up on something before you criticise it. These are long term-unemployed, the people it seem are unemployable due to not having sufficient skills or job shortages in the area. If someone takes umbrage with being made to take compulsory training or being involved in work placements after such a period of unemployment, I'd query their true motivation in finding employment.

There is little or no evidence that suggests forcing people into work is beneficial. They are often forced into jobs that are low paying (so they remain on benefits) or they are forced into working instead of doing something that will benefit them (and society) long term.

Excuse my skepticism but this 'job training' will amount to little more than low paid, low quality undependable jobs.

One of the best way to get people into good jobs and to improve themselves is to support them and get them educated and all this system will do is to prevent people from improving themselves by forcing them to take a shitty, low paid, low skills, undependable job.

I take it you're not working at the moment?
