Tablet Devices

I am thinking of asking the wife for one of these for Christmas. I expect all you technology fans will already be sporting one.

What would you recommend?

My main uses would be:

- browse web (inc email and forum use)

- e-books / e-mags

- watching some TV (BBC Iplayer etc). In Aberdeen this summer, friends of ours had a tablet and were watching wimbledon on it, out in the garden, albeit it with a 1 second delay or something (so the BBC could say it wasnt live).

- games (ive seen you can get console game emulators to relive your plooky youth)

- suppose it would make sense as music and picture strorage too

Are they really worth it? Sometimes I cant be assed with gadgets, but I prefer tinkering on the PC to watching TV - at least using a tablet would let me sit in the living room.

What one would you recommend? I liked the look of the Kindle Fire, but I hear you need to pay to have adverts removed from it (ridiculous).

Brand names are not important to me. Wouldnt want to spend too much (we arent all oil-rich Aberdonians lol) maybe 200 at most (preferably less).

How capable are these devices really?

Is it possible to create / work-on documents on them (eg MS office) or are you limited to short docs like emails?

Can they run PC type strategy games, (even basic ones), or are you limited to 8/16-bit console games?

I would like it to be an easy-to-use, robust device (as befits my nature).

Just move your PC into the living room.

200 quid saved right there.

No worries. I'm here to help.

Normally these questions would just be opinions but the Nexus 7 2013 model gives you so much bang for your buck you would only be comparing it two the higher end tablets that cost £400 +.

Make sure it's this one 2013 model, it doesn't come with a sd card slot so you will have to choose between 16 and 32 Gs - that's a £40 decision. If I were to buy I'd just opt for the 16.

Check out Google Play for what you can download :

https://play.google.com/store?hl=en_GB games are in Apps. There is a massive collection and there will be tons of games for anybody.

However if you want to relive your youth, I'd suggest this on your PC/laptop :

http://www.emulator-zone.com you will find tutorials on Youtube if difficult.

I got a nexus 7 free when I upgraded my phone at carphone warehouse a couple of months ago. I'm def no technology buff, but my bro is IT and he has one and says they are way better than overpriced ipads, just adding on £200 for the name.

I just use it for things you said and it's spot on, never even open my laptop anymore.

Why don't you pray for guidance, rather than asking a bunch of decietful Heathens like ourselves?

This post really hasn't received the recognition it deserved.

That's because they took away our +1s.

Stealing our women and taking all our +1s.

Fucking immigrants.

I'm not racist, but they should all be sent to camps and exterminated.

What were we talking about, again?

If a bigger one. Not carting it about all the time, better for films etc) nook hd+. If might be then as gazelle says nexus 7 (2013 version, make sure is the same name). If love tesco and not fucked use tesco vouchers on a Hudl (think £60 of vouchers). There is more specialist type things you can get but for a bird that'll do.
