Phoenix Wolves No More

Recommended Posts

Mackie's old team, The Phoenix Wolves, have been kicked out of USL Pro not just for being shite at fitba but for being terrible at everything.

The missteps in Phoenix FC’s one season came early and far too often. Off the field or on, it did not matter. From high ticket prices, fan interaction and customer service (or lack thereof), stadium issues, a rumored player revolt attempt, to a two-month winless streak (that helped the team finish second from the bottom of the league) and a heart-breaking, last-second loss in what has turned out to be the club’s final match, Phoenix FC’s one and only season was disastrous.

Managed and part owned by ex-Don Davie Robertson, it featured the talents of two other ex-Dons... Scott Morrison and the aforemention Darren The Dazzler Mackie. In effect, Phoenix was Little Aberdeen.

Darren was to be the man leading the Phoenix attack, piling up the scores and leading the Wolves to soccering glories.

Unfortunately for both Phoenix and Darren, Darren spent pretty much the entire season suffering from mild injury and, worse, being Darren Mackie.

Darren would manage to score less than no goals, only scoring a headed own goal in Phoenix' penultimate game, which took place in a public park as they couldn't afford to pay the rental on their 'stadium', fans who had paid for season tickets having to watch the game from cement steps or from behind a chain link fence outside the park.

The Phoenix supporters group, La Furia Roja, The Red Fury, has stated their intention to carry on as an organisation regardless of having no-one to actually support. The hope being that the empty USL Pro spot may be taken up by more competent owners in the Phoenix area.

Actually feel sorry for the fans...

Another chapter to add to Kelts big book of why Aberdeen is shit then...

My current project is Act Casual... a rollicking adventure featuring fashionable hi-jinks, footballing excellence, and tremendously haircutted scallywaggery in the early 80s.

Every word of it is true, the only things I've changed are names, places, and incidents, in order to protect the guilty parties.

I wanted it done by Christmas, but I have too much shit on my plate right now.

Classic example of how not to run a football club. Should have been a huge success - seems like the local hispanic population were desperate for a football club.

All the professional players they signed were absolute shite. Mackie was probably the best player, on the rare occassion he was actually fully fit. Compared to the rest of them, he actually looked quite cultured, holding up the ball, picking out passes and attempting to bring others in to the game (a side to his game I'd never seen in Scotland!). They signed quite a few brazilians on pro contracts too - these guys looked anything but brazilian and most of them jumped ship when they stopped getting paid. The local league amateur players actually saved Phoenix' ass on several occasions last season - they looked a cut above the remaining paid professionals.

I said it at the time, but I reckon the likes of Kincorth and Sportsman club from the AAFA Premier League would have beaten Phoenix comfortably.

Didn't realise David Robertson was part owner. Hopefully he lost a lot of money.
