We haven't got any money so we wont be poaching from anyone unless its a pre season contract. I'm sure mcinnes will address other weaknesses in the team this summer however our current issue is that of a defender. It will be a loan signing that we'll see in January and most likely a youth player from England.

What makes them unaffordable?

Lets look at Stevie May alone

Rotherham boss Steve Evans has suggested the club's interest in St Johnstone striker Stevie May has come to an end because of the Scottish side's asking price.

It was reported last week that the Millers had submitted a bid for the 21-year-old last week.

May has scored 11 goals from 19 games so far this season.

"We offered £300,000 and were quoted £800,000. That price is out of our range," Evans told BBC Radio Sheffield.

we couldnt even offer 300k

Higdon 6 months into a 2 year deal 6 goals in 10 but used as a sub mainly just 6 months into a 2 year contract would still attract a 6 figure fee

Boyd would easily meet somewhere between the two

so please tell me how they are affordable?

Fully expect a 6 month loan deal for a centre half.

Hope to shite we are looking to sign a decent full back though!! Mcnaughton?? Nae chance but would be great!

He would be the perfect signing. He can play (& play well) anywhere across the back four & also even in def mid if required but as you say "Nae chance" because even though Cardiff have just sacked McKay. McNaughton is out on loan at Bolton & has been their first choice RB the whole time he's been there. Played full 90 in all 13 games since arriving there.

Would be delighted if McInnes managed to get him some how but it will never happen (especially not in Jan)

Zola, Magennis and Vernon. None of them good enough. I suppose you could stick Cammy Smith in there too unfortunately. If he's not getting a game when we're screaming for a finisher then sure he's not cutting the mustard in training. I assume we get shot of Magennis and Vern in the summer (contracts up) and take in a striker then. I wouldn't be hopeful of anything til then. Elvis Costello will be back in January with his loan experience though so maybe we might get a few games and goals from him.

yes - both are opening up space for our midfield to score. Mcginn is 4th top scorer in the league at the moment. The role that Vernon and zola are asked to play is to make space for Pawlett and Mcginn both are doing that ok. Vernon never got on the score sheet at ICT 1st half (lets forget the 2nd) but was instrumental in making space for others

So I am happier with the output of both Zola and Vernon, I am much much more concerned about the lack of depth at the back.

Sounds like he's been shite for Alloa. I think we've seen the last of him in a dons shirt

Great! I thought we'd get something out of at least one of Smith and McMannus. Smiths 2 goals from his 30 appearances don't exactly fill me with confidence. I hope I'm wrong and they're late bloomers but I just can't see it at the moment.

Smith isn't played up front though, he's usually put on when there's not much time left in a game we're winning and we're sitting back happy with how things are.

The best we played this season was at Falkirk, where both Low and Smith featured.

I'd like to see a bold approach where these lads start regularly and the veterans are used sparingly, effectively the opposite of what we do at present.

Both of these lads did little wrong when selected, yet barely feature. Not exactly encouraging for them.

I agree low should get more game time however still very much undecided on smith. He is still young but just don't see the player everyone else is seeing. Would never consider dropping flood, outrageous as he's arguably our best player.

yeah to be fair all the praise united get for playing young players is more down to their older players being absolute gash. None of our first team midfielders are playing bad enough to get dropped

I'd also like to see us giving more youngsters a game and given we need a defender what about Scott Rumsby who we've got on loan at Stranrar. I'd rather give him some game to develop as opposed to trying and helping develop Reading's youngster's who's pretty poor in my view.

As for Smith and Low I'd like to see them given a chance but not sure Low's going to cut it and suspect Storie will soon be ahead of him. Smith's a good player but is often being played out of position and gets dropped regardless of how he plays so I suspect people will soon be getting on his back in the same way they do with McGinn and Vernon when they're played out wide/midfield for not scoring.
