CraigHill
Might go against the grain here, and as much as I'd love an away day I'd rather not be in Europe than be there for finishing third.Far too early a start to the season - 3rd July. The start for finishing second is slightly better, being two weeks later, but still early for competitive football.3 or 4 rounds to the Group stages too, which is a very tall order. Could just be a distraction that, if remotely successful, leads to fatigue later in the season if I'm honest. Link to comment
The Boofon
That's correct but it just means we play a couple more competitive games rather than pointless friendlies. Sparta Prague away or Brechin away? 1 Link to comment

As for fatigue later in the season point. It hasn't exactly affected Motherwell & (especially) St Johnstone now has it? We're most likely only speaking about two, or maybe four games extra in all honesty & if we do really well & have to play even more games then all the fkn better Link to comment
Tord31
We need to seal 3rd before we can look to go on and seal 2nd place. Agreed it would not be ideal playing euro qualifiers during the world cup but hopefully doesn't come to that Link to comment

Tord31
but they'd associate it with their summer holiday and not expect to be playing two competitive games during the tournament instead of watching the quarter finals with a beer in hand Link to comment

Tord31
or just use it as motivation to make sure we finish higher than 3rd? Link to comment
buchanskii
Here is a list of the teams that were involved for the qualifying rounds this season: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_UEFA_Europa_League_qualifying_phase_and_play-off_round Sarajevo away would be a cracking trip. The chances of us making the group stages are slim, look at some of the teams in the playoffs, fiorentina, spurs sevilla. Although if Wigan can make it... Link to comment

However, the other side of the coin is, even if we can only finish 3nd in the league, will be a massive increase in SPFL prize money, compared to 4th. Trade off being the players will have about a four week summer break. Will be interesting how McInnes factors this in, bearing in mind how successful the boot camp in Warwick Uni was last year. Season ends May 11th, we may have to play a Euro tie on July 3rd, so needs the players back, say, mid June, one week training at home, another in Warwick, puckle pre season games, then we're into Europe. If we lose that Euro game, not sure what McInnes plans would be for the rest of July. Link to comment

Byrne Baby Byrne
Potentially 8 games to reach the group stages. Hahaha. Football is so bad now... They'll do anything to keep money away from wee teams Was only a couple of years ago hearts went straight into the play off round to play Liverpool. Need a decent run from a couple of Scottish teams to get the co-efficient back up... As much as it pains most of you 1 Link to comment
super_al
I remember reading a few years back that Aberdeen thought they would lose money playing small teams in early qualifiers due to the high flight costs during the summer months. Link to comment
