Daugava Riga And The New Era

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm Abramdon. I live in the village of Abram near Wigan, south of the border. ( In my defence I would say that I lived in Aberdeen from 1982 to 2001,) I've been on your site as a guest for the last couple of years. I thought it was time I joined. I am 50 and have followed the Dons off and on (mainly off) since 1982. I went to few games in the 80's and 90's. I 2007 I regained interest in football and as I live near Wigan and Manchester I started to follow Manchester United (from my seat in the pub). When Fergie retired I decided to get back to my roots and follow the Dons. My first game was on 11/8/13 and I have been to four since. Before I get to the point I will give my brief thoughts on these five games (in case anybody is interested.)

11/8/13 - Motherwell 1, Aberdeen 3 (W) - My introduction to the Del and Doc. I liked what I saw.

16/3/14 - The Final - Aberdeen 0, Inverness (0) win in penalty shoutout (W) - I had to buy a ticket in the inverness end. I know I shouldn't have done it but I HAD to be there. I kept my gob shut and there were no problems. I celebrated later when no one was looking. (Before you criticise me it was either that or watch it on telly.)

22/8/14 - Kilmarnock 0 Aberdeen 2 (W) - I like Josh Maggenis he seems like a nice lad BUT how any team seriously expect to beat us with Josh Magenis playing upfront.

27/9/14 - Aberdeen 3, Inverness 2 (W) - Good to be back. First time at Pittodrie for 20 years. RDS Lower. Could have gone either way. We ended the comedy defending just in time.

31/ 1/15 - The Semi-Final - Aberdeen 1 Ushited 2. (L) Didn't think I'd get a ticket for the final with two loyalty points so went to the semi. We bottled it. They wanted it more than we did. Please God don't let it happen again on Sunday.

Now down to business. I'm going to make my point. I don't know much about football but I am better with football history. The first great era of AFC lasted from around 1976 to 1995. An era during which we regularly got to cup finals and won trophies. Ally Mcleod won the League cup on 6 November 1976 marking the start of the era. Roy Aitken won the league cup on 26 November 1995 marking the end of the era. Are we already in the second great era of AFC? Did the second great era of AFC start on 16/3/14 when we won the League cup? If I have enough pints of Carlberg I start to believe that we are already in the second great era of AFC.

When I had a few pints the other night I noticed something else. Our last serious title challenge was 1993/4, What marked the end of the era of us challenging for the title? The next season began with us playing a team from Riga, Latvia (Skonto Riga) in Europe. They humiliated US. What marks the start of the new era of AFC challenging for the tittle. We beat Daugava Riga 8 nil and humilated THEM. How many times have we played Latvians in Europe? Twice.

Let me know what you think. Is it spook or do I have to cut down on the ale?

What ale was it?

Its Abramdon again, that got 21 more replies than I thought I would get. Lets leave aside the Latvian connection for a bit (although I do find it a bit spooky).

What have I leaned from this? 1) You need to have a thick skin to be on this site. You really need to work on your welcome, guys. I'm not easily offended but some people are, we don't want to frighten off new members. Cheers for the welcome dave_min. You get my vote.

The point I really was trying to make before these pesky Latvians got involved was this, Does anyone else believe that we are already in the second great era of AFC (when we get to cup finals and win leagues) or does everybody think we will bottle it on Sunday and Del and Doc will be off down south in the summer?

Welcome min. Your two posts on this thread are excellent. In respect of your question we do not have a team of bottlers so the answer to your question is no and we will win tomorrow against celtic. Get your hard-earned on us at 5/1 with Bet365 :lolceltic: . One of the bets of the season.

Welcome min.

Don't be surprised by the abuse. It's like a primary school playground in here at present and is off putting even for long standing members like me.

I agree with your post. We are on the cusp of something special.

Probably because some of the members look like primary school children.

Hi abramdon.

I liked your posts they are both thought provoking and interesting. Textbook posts really.

My tuppence worth is that no we are not entering another golden era. Arguably to date we have had one major victory and that was the cup win over Celtic. Everything else in terms of league position and cup victories have came against teams we should beat. Our cup defeats have also been at the hands of teams inferior in terms of league position and resources. Everything to do with the club was so abysmal for so many years that this may feel like a golden era. If we win the league however then we could classify it as a golden era.

Finally, what are your thoughts on dave whelan and Wigan will relegation mean an end to your other club's own golden era?
