A fine policy.

* You should start a mail order business!

** I cant say I have ever seen mead in the shops - it is specialist stores only or simply less common than your run of the mill stuff?

It sounds an interesting drink to try alright.

*** Wouldnt be surprised, "diligence" is not a trait I would associate with either!

Thank you!

Im half exicted / half terrified

Also worried it will scupper my "new car" idea lol

* I would need to hold a commercial license if I wanted to charge. The policy for that in Michigan is the same as if I wanted to distil spirits. $1000 for my license, with $50,000 security. Not going to risk 50 grand of Kelt's hard earned, given the love of litigation in this country.

** It's pretty great. Honey booze. Problem is it's too easy to throw down your neck and you end up making an arse of yourself.

*** Two stage fermentation means you let it ferment for a bit, syphon only the clear liquid, do the same again from the secondary fermenter, syphoning on the clear liquid, leave it to ferment, then add your sugars and bottle it for carbonation to take place. If you just tip from the brew pot straight into the carboy then into the bottles then all the silt and muck is going to go with it, and that... from what I can gather... can negatively impact the flavour and definitely impacts the clarity.

This is turning out to be not as complicated as I first thought.

Lot of folk don't advocate using a secondary ferment Kelt(though some do for specific types of beer). Apparently the risk of infection/oxidation isn't worth the (apparently) perceived benefit in a lot of cases. Though having said that most are kegging(unlike bottling) so you can leave that to clear for ages and bin the first pours. Often after chilling it way down then adding gelatin to pull out the proteins which will cause chill haze on a lager for example.

:hysterical:

Cracker.

On a side note does having a fancy set up beer tap like that not kind of defeat the purpose of home brew?

How'd you mean? Just means don't have to clean loads of bottles every time you do a batch.

If you mean cost. Freezer (£120) and the other bits cost a bit but for 50p decent pints (cheap ones maybe half that) fairly quickly levels out. Just ends up too tempting to be honest.

No I just mean pouring beer from a beer tap.

That's what pubs are for. Home brew if for pouring from a bottle.

Nothing more sinister than that.

  • 2 months later...

Had a wee experiment. Can of coopers pilsner malt and instead of sugar etc dumped nothing but a simply lager malt used a recycled batch of White Labs WLP300. OG 1047 FG 1009 would prefer lower but just glad it's not infected to shit recycling.

Anyways there she is:

Bravo,

Enough to make a glass eye weep.

Realistically, what does a batch cost you per pint from start to finish ? and what kind of % do you turn oot ?

You lose a dunt at the bottom of the fermenter and this one was more expensive cos it was like using two kits for one though I put more water in it since it was always going to be strong. Say £25 for 40 pints (60p a pint)?

If you're cheap can get to £13 for maybe 37 pints (35p a pint)?

I'm just using cans of extract and dry malt not grain etc. the cost of the gear is way more for that. Will say have lager in the house but prefer this, can't even explain what it's like (like an Märzen with all the malt) but tastes way better than the grolsch I've got sitting not getting used.

% wise this was a bit low at 4.2% roughly. I reused (poured out the dross from the last batch and reused the yeast) a fancier yeast which didn't seem that healthy so the FG was a bit high. I used mini kegs for some of it and put in more sugar to them so they might hit a bit higher % wise.

EDIT: Shit mis calc... is actually 4.99%. Just checked online for the first time, I've been miscalculating every brew...

If you've got £35 of clubcard vouchers to double up this isn't the worst starter pack.

You'll move on quick and don't get if you can use doubled vouchers but even if you don't fancy it after a first go it's not big shits. Should end up with bit under 40 pints from the first batch and you've still got the gear.
