Clydeside_Sheep
I see the powers that be made a right cock and balls of demolishing the derelict red road flats (once the tallest residential structures in europe). Of the 6 remaining towers, parts of two kept standing after the explosions. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-34495463 And this is what they wanted to put in the commonwealth games opening ceremony too - what a riddy that would been, showing the world that we cant even break something properly. For a while, 1000s of evacuated local people were stuck out of doors, not allowed to go home because the authorities didnt know what to do in the face of these 2 stubborn tower blocks - showing how good the planning was. The blow up was meant to be at noon originally, and we went to see it - but it was quickly obvious that it was the usual "Scottish event"; that is, everyone standing about aimlessly, no-one really sure what was going on or when things were meant to happen, no-one obviously in charge, an air of confusion etc, so we just went home again. They eventually managed to hit the plungers about 3-4 hours later. Apparently the delay was down to attention seekers in the danger zone refusing to leave their homes, in a transparent attempt to get their face / name into the local rag.Tommy Sheridan wannabes. I can imagine the authorities fannying about trying to get warrants to enter properties to bring people out etc. One justified her awkwardness saying "I am concerned about everything". Got all the bases covered there, eh? How ironic that this event - which broadcast the failure of Glasgows (ie Labours) social housing policy over the last 50 years - was itself a failure? "As the dust settled, it became clear that a substantial part of two blocks remained standing" Link to comment
Ke1t
Or it's a testament to just how well they were built that even 'splosions couldn't knock them down. Apparently they used a steel frame instead of concrete... then stuffed it full of asbestos, just in case the place wasn't dangerous enough. I wonder if they were built with the intention of being vertical slums, or if that only happened after the residents moved in. Link to comment

BWG
Wish they'd knock those cunting skyers down at the castlegate. Link to comment
Reed or deed
Ha ha, what are the odds of that thing landing bolt upright after they cut its legs off? Can't help thinking about the dark knight in money pythons holy grail. Wouldna be surprised if there were still some junkie squatters in the top floor while it came down, probably nane the wiser. Clydeside_Sheep
Or it's a testament to just how well they were built that even 'splosions couldn't knock them down. The debacle reminds me of the various efforts to blow up the fuhrer-bunker and the flak towers in berlin after the war. Apparently the reds got fed up with repeated failed efforts to blow up the bunker and ended up just flooding it with concrete. Some parts of the Flak Towers are still standing yet! However, it would doubtless unfairly flatter Glesga Cooncil to compare their efforts with the civil engineering of the 3rd Reich! Link to comment
Clydeside_Sheep
Wish they'd knock those cunting skyers down at the castlegate. There are high rises coming down all over Glasgow, it will probably be the same across Scotland. Link to comment
Clydeside_Sheep
Ha ha, what are the odds of that thing landing bolt upright after they cut its legs off? What are the odds of two of them doing it? (as has happened). Definitely a balls up! To drive past and glance at what is left over the top of local houses etc - you wouldnt think anything was amiss, it just looks like smaller flats! Link to comment
Clydeside_Sheep
Glasgow's finest wait patiently for the non event. Those zombies look far more organised that the crowds yesterday (and better dressed). The zombies are quite apt though - heard on the radio yesterday the flats were known as the "towers of terror", thanks to their reputation for drugs, violence and blood in the stairwells. DD1903
Red road flats were grim. I worked up that way years ago very briefly. If one person was leaving work, we used to have to go out in a group to check it was safe for them to leave and watch them get to their car (if it was still there!). I remember one night, I went to leave and one boy stopping me...'give 5 minutes. It's a running battle out there.' Sure enough...bottles etc were being flung about between 2 large groups of tracksuit wearing nuggets Link to comment
