Windows 8 / Windows 10 Questions

I keep getting microsoft pop-ups telling me I can upgrade to windows 10 for free, from my current windows 8.

Is it worth doing? I think windows 8 is shit, but then 10 isn't likely too much better. I like the idea of having the latest one, but then am wary as I am essentially giving MS an opportunity to f*ck my PC up.

And does anyone know how to edit what programs boot up upon starting the PC on windows 8?

Blasted technology! Thanks for any advice!

It's quite simple really.

The free update offer lasts for a year, so there's no pressure to decide right now. With many new features, and various system improvements upgrading is a no-brainer for most people, and in our review we explain in more depth why we're impressed. Here, we’ll explain who should and shouldn't upgrade, and offer a couple of reasons why you might want to hold off for the first few weeks.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? Can I downgrade again?

One of the first questions we’re often asked when it comes to upgrading a system is how easily can you go back to your old one if you don’t like it. The answer with Windows 10 is that it's very easy.

Microsoft has built in a simple process that only requires a few clicks to have the system roll back to your previous version of Windows (so long as you haven’t deleted the windows.old folder in which the previous version lives). You can read our guide to downgrading Windows 10.

When we tested this helpful feature it successfully took data and installed apps with it, meaning you’re good to go as soon as the process is complete. Of course, as with any operating system installation, you’ll want to make a full backup of your data before you begin either the upgrade or the downgrade.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? It’s free!

The biggest decision taken by Microsoft with Windows 10 was to offer the OS as a free upgrade to current users of Windows 7 and 8.1. In fact there’s a good chance that your PC is already displaying a new icon in the system tray, prompting you to reserve your copy of Windows 10. There has been a little confusion over exactly who can upgrade, but this has been clarified now by Microsoft and boils down to you having an activated and genuine copy of Windows 7 (SP1) or 8.1 installed on your PC. Those with oolder versions of 7 or 8 should use the Windows Update feature to bring their systems up to a qualifying version.

Back when Windows 10 officially launched, I ran down 10 reasons you should upgrade to the latest incarnation of Windows. Win10 may not yet offer any killer apps, but it provides a compelling combination of features that may tempt you to take the plunge -- the greatly improved navigation for mousers, new browser, facial recognition, and Cortana all rate as significant improvements over what you are currently getting from Win7 and Win8.

But yes, there are "but"s. As I noted in my full review of Windows 10, it may have a few too many rough edges to tempt you, especially if you’re comfortable with what you have. “Better the Devil ye ken, than the Devil ye don't” -- those are wise words, born of much pain.

In this slideshow, I step you through the main reasons why you may, legitimately and without a tinfoil hat, want to stick with Windows 7 or Windows 8. There are powerful arguments in the direction of staying put.

2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that ALL Scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. The Bible is a work of God that was written by human men that were inspired by God. What better source of inspiration than our Creator! Whether you are looking for motivation, encouragement, reassurance, or peace, the Bible can inspire you!

This collection of inspirational Bible verses can lead you into a deeper understanding of who God is and what His plan is for your life. He wants to "prosper you and not to harm you, to give hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11) You can also send these to a family member or friend in need and be assured that God can work miracles when we choose to believe His promises! Use these verses to be inspired and motivated to continue believing and having faith!

If it's a reasonably new machine then go for it. The only real difference you'll notice is that they added the searchbox and Start Menu back in, and hopefully they took out and shot the silly cunt who thought it would be a great idea to get rid of them in the first place.

Other than that, most people won't notice a great deal of difference.

I've upgraded on my (brand new) work lapper, not bothering on my (2 year old) desktop.

From now on there's not going to be a 'Windows X' release going forward, from what Microsoft is saying, but rather incremental patches that upgrade Windows 10. Don't know if those will be free/cheap/expensive or what. I don't see how they're going to maintain that policy, since tech changes, and the requirements of an OS will change in a decade anyway. Imagine if they'd simply released patches for Win 9x instead of stripping it down and rebuilding it.

Anyway, I believe they're all tall lads at Microsoft, so I'm sure they know what they're doing.

I you're already running Windows 8 then I don't see any reason not to upgrade. I've got 2 Surfaces and a Sony and they all upgraded with no problems, even though I got an email from Sony telling me to wait. If your hardware can run Windows 8, it will run Windows 10.

This might help with your startup programs. http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/

But I agree with Dave. Get a Mac.

I have liked windows 7 after that its a mess for me although some things have improved but my biggest annoyance has to be that stupid metro userface which i avoid and stick to the desktop style

running dodgy version 8.1 just now on desktop

my advice go for it and if you dont like the metro style just use it the old way but if your used with the metro style then your rocking

saying that upgrades are shit but i dont suppose you got the choice of a fresh install

They never got rid of the ability to search in Windows 8.

So, update:

- tried to update windows twice in recent days

- first time it failed with some "random unspecified fuck up" error code

- figured it would let me try again without downloading all the files again; but, no - it did the protracted, drawn-out download again

- 2nd time it just froze when "preparing for installation"

- then it tried to do some funky shit without my prompting but I managed to knock that on the head lest I ended up with half an OS

- then it wouldn't let me delete the downloaded files, saying they were still in use (even though they weren't), and I had to switch it off and on again (an old jedi mind trick) before I could dispose of them

- then I managed to figure out how to stop the "get windows 10" pop up appearing and successfully did that

Remarkably, my PC is still working as intended after all this, though I am still on windows 8 - but a net result of nothing seems like a good result, after all the above

Bring back windows 95 - all I want or need is a basic desktop screen with icons!

So, having foolishly given Microsoft a "window" (geddit?) of opportunity to fuck my PC, I narrowly escaped with everything intact! :)

Thanks again for the advice, even though Microsoft couldn't live up to your help!

However, I did managed to disable unwanted programs at start-up, so that has been a plus!

Why has Bill Gates made so much money when his product is so appalling?

It's a remarkable tale of success from complete shite.

Very well said! +1

The genius of the IT industry simply lies in selling people shite that doesnt work.

Anyone could do similar* - all they need is a brass neck and no morals.

*To prove it, look at the guy who sold those "bomb detectors" to Iraq / afghanistan. It turns out they were just inaminate sticks, which had no function of any type, yet Govenments paid for them and in some places are still using them in the belief that these things will detect bombs.

I forgot what those shit as fuck days were like before I had a Mac. Thank fuck.

I made some icons for the internet links on my desktop this week, so it now looks all neat and smart. Aye, I was bored as fuck.
