Clydeside_Sheep
Something I amused myself with over the weekend: If we take the team that won the ECWC as the starting point for the "best aberdeen side ever", which (if any) latter day players would get into that side? Or, which players are roughly on a par with their 1983 counterpart, even if they wouldn't displace them from the side. Would (say) Jess, Gillhaus or Snelders have got into that 1983 side? Those were the names which jumped out at me anyway. Link to comment

Ke1t
Klinsmann. He was almost* a Dons player, so I feel it's fair to have him in the side. *almost Link to comment
Dynamo
Klinsmann. He was almost* a Dons player, so I feel it's fair to have him in the side. *almost Aye but would you pick him before Henry or Batistuta? Link to comment
SheepieBaaBaa
I'd think Jess could at least make the bench. I'd have Gilhaus ahead of McGhee but other than that I can;t think of anyone. Anderson would make the bench? Richardson? Link to comment
strachanmcgheegoal
Its not so much the player in but who do you take out. GK + 2 CH's are obviously untouchable. (Note to Snelders fans - the pass back rule didn't apply then so fuck off). No's 7, 8, 10 and 11 likewise. Suspect Kennedy would have played had he been fit. A better right back? Mckimmie possibly. Superkev worth a shout. Robertson instead of Rougvie? Completely different players like. McDougal (the slim version) or Gilhaus instead of Mcghee - Gilhaus maybe, but again different players. Jess instead of Cooper - swirl instead of thud? Maybe although lets face it a ball player wasn't going to phase Real Madrid (remember the farce when Jess was going to play Torino off the park and Carbone tore him a new one) but a maniac who led into a tackle with his jaw was enough to unsettle them. Robbie Winters
Snelders for Gunn Link to comment
Zoltan1983
There isn't a chance kev mcnaughton would have got in that team. An argument for Davie Robertson at most. Link to comment
The Oxford Don
Paul Mason instead of Eric Black... play him in behind McGhee? Gillhaus instead of McGhee? Bett in place of Simpson? Robertson in place of McMaster? Those are the only ones I can think of who would even get close. Jess would struggle to make the bench IMO. Link to comment
Tommy
The players who performed in Gothenburg are legends and none are replaceable. As good as Bett, Mason, Robertson, Gillhaus etc were, the CWC winners were a special teamthat does not need tweaking. 3 Link to comment
RUL
I guess it comes from that recent AFC poll about the best team of all time. Pretty surprised to see Anderson and Shearer in it. Link to comment

Why would you change a winning team. The players already spoke about had their own time to make history with the club, some did some never, 1 Link to comment

Canna believe you would suggest anyone replacing Eric Black. Boy was fucking unreal. 19 years old, playing in the ECWC final against Real Madrid, trying bicycle kicks. Black was probably the best forward player I ever saw in the flesh. Link to comment

Hence the question mark in my initial post. My basic point still stands... there's almost no-one in that team who would be replaced by anyone who came after, Black very much included. He was my favourite player when I was a kid. Link to comment

Ke1t
Gilhaus in for McGhee or Black... Probably the best footballer we've had after Miller. Maybe Jess for Cooper. Snelders for Gunn. Bett for Watson. Archibald for Hewitt. Link to comment
ericblack4boss
Hans in for McGhee, your nae putting out black, scored in every cup final he started for us, Link to comment

The way he hung in the air, I've never seen any other player like that before or since, As I said scored in every cup final he started, but not good enough for you buffoon, Young, clever, took punishment ,and came back for more, a composed finisher, a penalty box striker, who played in the support striker role, For the love of Christ, man, I've had pelters on here for what I've posted but that is just as bad, chief.
