Clydeside_Sheep
There is a new Royal Research ship (for Polar surveys etc) being built and the public can vote to name it. The name currently winning (and romping it) is Boaty McBoatface. Get voting! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-35860760 1 Link to comment

caledonia
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/apr/18/boaty-mcboatface-may-not-be-name-of-new-polar-research-vessel It might be the democratic will of the people, but RRS Boaty McBoatface will probably never weigh anchor, the government has signalled. The Natural Environment Research Council, which asked the public to vote on a name for its new £200m polar research vessel, confirmed on Sunday that the votes were overwhelmingly in favour of naming the state-of-the-art ship Boaty McBoatface. The suggestion received 124,109 votes, four times more than second-placed RRS Poppy-Mai, named after a 16-month-old girl with incurable cancer. The chief executive of the NERC, Duncan Wingham, will have the final say in the naming of the boat, leaving him with a dilemma: delight the public and enrage the scientific establishment, or lose the goodwill the campaign has generated. Several PR experts have urged Wingham to keep the name to keep the momentum of public interest going. However, Jo Johnson, the science minister, signalled the government was preparing to activate its get-out clause. “The new royal research ship will be sailing into the world’s iciest waters to address global challenges that affect the lives of hundreds of millions of people, including global warming, the melting of polar ice and rising sea levels,” he said.“That’s why we want a name that lasts longer than a social media news cycle and reflects the serious nature of the science it will be doing. There are many excellent suggestions among the 7,000 names put forward by members of the public and we’ll make a decision as to which one should be put forward for the royal warrant when we’ve had a chance to review them all.” Link to comment
tightbreeks
I love big engineering. The allseas fleet has some awesome kit. Their new creation was going to be called after the founders old man, who just happened to be a nazi. But since it's swiss they didn't care, until the public found out and they changed it. There's a good film, the pipe, and the solitaire turns up to lay the pipeline and this mad Irishman blocks its path because he's crabbing. Tension in a rural Irish community. It has the obligatory mad woman that turns up at town hall meetings and causes a ruckus. Link to comment

BWG
As if 90% of the people that voted give a flying fuck about the ship. It was just a poll hijacking and will be completely forgotten about in 6 months. Anyway I think we need to organise a minutes applause on the 16th minute on Friday. Poppy-mai was a massive dandy.
