Log Burners. Are They Worth It?

Can't tell you what kind to get, but I've two and they put out a fair bit of heat. One of them heats our Family Room (and this is a BIG room) to the point that our neighbour comes round in the dead of winter wearing his shorts and a T-shirt because he knows the house is going to be like a fuckin' furnace.

Once the burner reaches a certain temperature a fan kicks in, and apparently I can divert heat from the burner to other rooms, though I've never bothered to figure out how.

Anyway, handy to have if the power goes out, but if you plan on using it a lot then a wood shed is a good idea. We get a few cords of wood delivered by our drunken handyman and that should see us through the coldest months.

We got one put in the house when we moved in and as Kelt says, they do put out a fair heat. Ours can only burn logs but there are others that a duel fuels etc.

The living room is 6x6 m and I think our burner is a 5kw output or something, I dunno the technical terms but that puts out more than enough heat

Don't get a tiny wee one. The one in my apartment area can only take about two good sized logs at a time, means you are forever checking if it needs another put in.

They are nice, and do give out a good heat once they get going and the whole structure is heated up. I much prefer an open fire for sitting beside however. Although you can just open the door on the stove, it's not quite the same.

Ideally I'd like to reopen the fire up but when I put a new roof on my house, a few years ago, I knocked down the chimney to bedroom floor level.

I'm thinking of getting a stainless steel flue that goes up through my bedroom floor then goes out my gable wall, rather than the roof, which is a 3 ply flat roof. (a big dormer) My only worry with that is it would have to go through vertical tiles (Redland Cambrian) and those fuckers are put down to stay down.

I've had a wee dekko on the internet but prices are hard to find. I heard the flue is £100 per meter but that's it really.

I'll have to get a couple of prices from firms in the Stirling-Falkirk area I suppose. Even though I live in Central, I have an EH postcode and that can make things dearer.

Hoping for something decent for under 3k, tbh.

Easily come under 3k. We got a Chesney 6kw with a three storey flue for 2.6k.

I have a Chesney Alpine! It is a little more modern looking and would compare it to the smeg fridges you get. It was a little different from the traditional burners you get. The picture isn't of mine!

Did the sparky mix up inches with centimetres when he put the sockets in?...skirting boards will have to be hooring wide to span the gap

No. Give it a quick wipe every now and again but the heat means it rarely gets dirty.

Spray on Oven Cleaner does the trick, I find... even if a log has fallen against the glass and burned it, a quick blast of the old oven cleaner and the soot just slides aff.
