Tactics For The Season

Recommended Posts

On the games where Stockley has played, the game plan of direct football is taking precedence.

This should be plan B when in the last 15-20 minutes of a game.

Against St J, it was early ball after early ball and not building up the phases of play and getting to the byline.

Our pace in the team causes team issues, many SPL teams will easily deal with long balls into the box from distance.

We need to be play football, create patterns of play as we have done in the past last season which, when on form, teams found it difficult.

Maybe our away record last season has changed McInnes mind set to become a more pragmatic team away from home...but the answer is not in the long ball it's in a stable centre half pairing and centre mid that can power through a game and create - we still do not have this (although O'Connor looks promising).

I'd hate to see a season of lumping it forward.

Stockley's goal threat (and I wasn't there on Sunday so happy to defer) would seem to come through Hayes doing what you say, byline, back post, goal. Without Hayes (or Mcginn, Burns or Storey doing the same thing), from the little I've seen of Stockley in the euro games you're not going to get many goals from open play. He's not a natural poacher and doesn't seem to have the quickness of reaction for stramashes like Rooney. I can't comment on his effectiveness from set pieces because none of us can comment on any of our player's effectiveness from set pieces. We need a Robson type delivery to answer that question. :swear:

In open play, lumping high balls to Stockley requires us to pick up the second ball. Michael Stewart made this point last night with a big red rectangle that seemed to cover the entire half. Play alongside and off him (whoever) or don't play him - use him as the impact sub for the last 20 minute battlecharge.

Rooney alongside Stockley all season will be brutal for sure and as others have said will play to the standard strengths of your average SPFL sides - two gorilla centre halfs and precious little else.

Having Stockley up top seems to only be encouraging Taylor and Reynolds to hoof the ball aimlessly up field more than they already do.

I like Stockley and think he looks a useful player, but we are sacrificing playing any sort of decent football to lump it onto his head, and half the time no-one is near him to pick up the flick on's anyway.

What a load of shit. We were painfully predictable last season.

I don't mind the option of starting with Stockley up front and lumping it. It worked against Maribor who are as good a team as we'll come up against all season (we should have won about 45 nil).

Aye, looking forward to playing Qaraborg in the next round. Roll on the group stages.

Only works if he's got someone to link up with, we caused them a lot more trouble once Rooney came on.

I think it was the Maribor manager who called it when he said Aberdeen are very direct and played lots of long balls and sure enough we played about 3 or 4 long balls in the first few minutes. That is going to happen a lot more but I guess with Hayes and McGinn at full flow there should be enough good football going on to keep us entertained. There is no question we are going more direct. Leicester weren't quite as direct as us but they had a clear policy of getting the ball forward quickly so wouldn't be surprised if McInnes is feeling this change may result in us being more competitivve against teams like st johnstone and hearts etc?

Neither have needed Stockley in the team before to play like that so I doubt introducing him into the team has encouraged that, its just how Reynolds in particular plays. Both need to learn to play it to their full backs and let them pick the passes.

If they can't handle a direct ball in the air then why shouldn't we try it? It's worked against us plenty times.

Last season we outplayed Celtic at home. Most of our play was playing a direct ball to Rooney who was up against Tierney and playing the ball on the ground from there. I don't want us doing this against the likes of Hearts or Caley, but it certainly has it's merits in other games.

Our strikers and forward players need to be able to drive into the opposition penalty box and take on the defenders. Basic football skills for a pro. Only use crossing balls when you are capable of a descent cross Basic football skills for a pro. Our defenders need to be able to jump and head the ball away Basic football skills for a pro . Get practising these skills and we half way to winning the title.

TBF that is a massive improvement from them compared to last season. At least the ball is going in the right general direction from them sometimes now.

i still don't think McInnes has figures out his best formation, team and tactics.

It showed in the game last night.

There is absolutely a very good side in that squad with players with technique, pace, a bit of class now with Maddison and generally a good mentality.

McInnes is almost making it harder for them to play well. Keep it simple, play the best players in their best positions.

I think he knows, but he's just slow to adapt things in games, I think he often overthinks everything. He was forced to switch things around last night with Hayes getting an injury and it took a while for him to tweak things properly
