dj_bollocks
Any suggestions - going to punt all my DVD's as trying to reduce space. Tried MacXDVD Pro last night and it took forever to rip a DVD - any suggestions ? Thanks in advance... Link to comment
spamspamspam
Have you tried just copying the file instead of ripping and mounting the disc for playback? A lot of the time taken for ripping is the conversion, get rid of that and you can cut the time right down. Link to comment

Where would I find out more ? Link to comment
dave_min
I bought myself one of those suitcases, threw out the boxes and just kept the discs. Much easier (and quicker) solution. Link to comment

Right click on the disc, explore disc and copy the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file, paste to HD.You should be able to play that file using VLC player Right now you're ripping the disc and changing its format to MP4 during the rip. Its the conversion of the file thats taking so long, not the copying of the file itself. Test it first obviously, its been a long time since I copied a DVD onto my HD but thats how I used to do it. dj_bollocks
Some of the disc are encrypted so when I've tried to lob the .VOB onto the desktop they come out fucked... Some of the VOB files aren't visible at all...Might be that their different regions... Think I'm probably going to have to do this the hard way... *sigh* Link to comment
dj_bollocks
Ok - getting the idea of this now.... If I copy the ISO does that mean it's still restricted - i.e. If it's a Region 1 DVD and my Laptop is set at Region 2 and I can't change it anymore... ? Copying the ISO seems the sensible way forward rather than conversion.... decisions decisions... Link to comment

dj_bollocks
Seems to work fine - clearly a bit bigger in file size terms then I'd originally thought... But these days that's not much of a chore when it comes to saving on a hard drive is it...? Link to comment

Just back up through the night, no fucking about and its all done by the time I wake up. Link to comment
beer gut
Save yourself a ton of hassle and just download digital copies from newsgroups or similar sites. The restricting factor will be your PC processer speed and RAM. Not the software. I used to use handbrake (free) to convert stuff to avi, mkv etc but it can take ages for just one movie. Link to comment
dj_bollocks
Yeah it's DVD's of stuff that aren't readily available (that I've already bought).... So comedy stuff that has long since fallen off the radar, Dons DVDs that need digitised... and stuff that don't have HQ rips on the interwebz... then the DVDs are getting punted to eBay as I'm trying to downsize all that shit... Now that I know that VLC plays the .iso's I'm just ripping then, I'm assuming they can be converted if I want to... Bought a 4TB WD Passport External Hard Drive and will stick them all on there and hope I don't lose or destroy it... I think I'm happy with that after a few false starts ! Link to comment
