Guest
I used to say that when Hayes and McGinn played well, we would always look likely to win, and when they were having an off day, we were utterly garbage. I must admit to not seeing this day come where we'd be without both of our mainstays for the past 3 seasons. Let's not mince our words here - this is gonna take some really clever transfer activity and potentially blowing the vast amount of the money we've recouped for Hayes (and McInnes if he does end up leaving). Maloney? Yes, I'll take that as a replacement for McGinn. Tansey and Christie will be the biz in midfield alongside McLean and Shinnie. Another winger to compliment Maloney if we get him.... any thoughts? Link to comment

Guest
Did this really need a new thread? Was gonna stick it somewhere else like the McInnes thread, but for me, it's quite a monumental moment in our recent history. They carried AFC for 4 years almost. The amount of goals and assists they generated is staggering. So yeah, losing those two is like losing your eyesight. I think it merits it's own thread. Link to comment
sooth_stander
Can see us signing Maloney, Nicholson and Greg Stewart. Followed a white Audi Q7 down Queens Rd yesterday, reg plate GMS 28. Link to comment

Maloney will stay at Hull. But Greg Stewart is a possibility. So one out of four, and Christie on loan. Worrying. Link to comment

Guest
Any stats on how many assists/goals these two scored between them in their time at the club? Trying to think of two players who I would bracket in the same vein as them that played together that were so influential for us.... Miller and McLeish about all I can think of. Obviously we don't have much to compare to. Link to comment

Lewis Logan O'Connor Reynolds Considine Wright McLean Tansey Shinnie Stockley Rooney And that's with our only signing and all the departures. A team good enough to win most of their games in this league. The club will continue. Life goes on. We are strong financially. Who's to say we won't be even better next season? Fed up being negative. V for Vendetta
Maloney's not a winger for a start. Thats what I was thinking. I also have a feeling that if Christie is coming on loan then the Maloney deal is probably a dead - we can surely only fit so many players into that central attack mid role. Link to comment

Guest
Maloney's not a winger for a start. Really? He played on the wing for Celtic and every time I've seen him in a Scotland shirt he's been out wide. They were very important, but to say they carried us is over the top. You'd think someone's died. Lewis Logan O'Connor Reynolds Considine Wright McLean Tansey Shinnie Stockley Rooney And that's with our only signing and all the departures. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I think most would agree that they have been the backbone of this McInnes team and without the two of them, we wouldn't have won so many games. They pretty much supplied Rooney with the majority of his goals. They made the team tick. They were at the heart of every attack we had due to McInnes' style of play in that he like to use width and hit on the counter. Every time either Hayes or McGinn were either injured of having a stinker, we struggled. IT's not about being negative - I'm confident we can replace them. Bit it's a big ask. As for using a lad who's only had one 1st team start against a dreadful Partick Thistle, I think that's placing far too much expectation on the young lad. We need experienced players to take the 1st team places and augment them with younger talented ones, giving them regular slots off the bench like we did with Cammy Smith and Low for instance. I can see Christie being used wide and cutting in. Square pegs, round holes. He's not a wide player. Neither was Maddison, and the use of him out there in Cup Final was a failure. Christie should ONLY be played in middle behind Rooney. Link to comment

Mr John
New manager and some new players. So, new tactics.Good teams play to their strengths, hence how we played in these past 4 seasons. Link to comment
Big Hat Logan
One of the more concerning aspects is that not only have we lost our two best players, Adam Rooney's game is getting onto crosses into the box from wide areas. Without quality delivery from the wings he is going to be even more limited than he has been this season. Potentially needing yet another striker for next season. Link to comment
V for Vendetta
Really? He played on the wing for Celtic and every time I've seen him in a Scotland shirt he's been out wide. He left Celtic 10 years ago TWL. Has developed and changed as a player and doesn't really look like a proper winger these days. Doesn't really have the pace to be a proper winger and is more of a possession player IMO, could still play wing of course but his best position has got to be behind the striker IMO. Link to comment

Granted, players can often be moulded to something else. Take Shinnie as an example. But Maloney's crosses and use of a dead ball mean he is a stick on for left mid if he comes here. Link to comment
muttonhumper
Fit's Peter Weir up to these days?Best winger I've seen in my puff. Fa is Niall McGinn signing for? This seems a bit of a mystery. As far as Wright is concerned, he's nae in ony wie ready to replace either Hayes or McGinn. They need replaced by established players capable of at least coming somewhere near the departing pair's level. BWG
With Hayes being sold and some new money coming into the club, could we offer McGinn an improved deal? He's not been linked with anyone so maybe he'd be open to signing again? Link to comment

The Hawk
Just a question about McGinn - did he ever come out and say he was leaving and/or has left? Most players these days when they leave put a message to the fans on social media that usually ends #onceadon or something there abouts, he just seems to have gone quietly Link to comment

Andy_123
He told the board that he would be leaving Aberdeen because he wanted a final crack down south, not because he was unhappy up here as such. If nobody semi decent is wanting him, it wouldn't be outwith the realms of possibility he'd want to come back. Very slim chance of it happening though Link to comment
