Forums V Social Media

Can't help but think forums have had their day, but it's a shame. Topics got more seriously discussed on forums rather the kind of free for all on social media. Twitter in particular is just a nonsense of left wing PC mad feminism. I can't stand it any more.

Aberdeen-Mad back in the day was probably the best before it went downhill. afc.co.uk chat was also good.

Sometimes these days when you want to discuss something online its hard to know where to go. Social media is somehow more but less. Forums were less but more.

Thoughts?

I always thought that forums were part of the social media, the only difference being they have a built in anonymity which Facebook, Twitter and all the rest do not have. Having said that I do think you have raised an interesting issue even though you do not give any supporting evidence that forums are on the decline. In support of forums I would argue that it gives ordinary people, who may not be vocal in real life, a platform to air their opinions the downside being it allows complete headcases to spew their bile with complete impunity if the moderators are not up to the job ( no criticism of our fine police intended ) As to your point that feminism is somehow a left wing phenomena you really need to get a grip. It is, and always has been, an upper/middle class pet project from Pankhurst right through to today's snots who scream about equality while paying their Nanny the minimum wage. Total distraction which deflects ordinary people away from the real problems facing them, like food banks, the attack on the disabled, homelessness and our NHS.

There you go buddy, forums are still alive and kicking as well as being relevant and a conduit for free speech.

People generally have 3 social personalities and or roles to play;

1, in the home/with family

2, at the workplace/school

3, in one's private life i.e. with friends/doing a hobby/in a pub/ at a match etc.

Social media now takes in numbers 1 and 2 for the most part therefore there is still a 'need' for number 3 which as mentioned above^ the general anonymity of the forum provides.

What I find interesting is why people, including myself still indulge in an avatar and handle that are different from my actual name - I think it must equate to a release from the 'responsibility' conferred in roles 1 & 2 noted above. I don't have to try to 'be' as I want others to see me - a key component of social consciousness.

Compare this with looks good in red who uses her own image as an avatar but not her own name. She's the only person on a forum I 'know' who does this and it is an interesting overlap of anonymity and social awareness but I can't be precise as to her motivation.

I always think of forums as pubs where the regular posters = the regulars and the mods = the bar staff/ landlord.

Agree with your points above... The heyday of the forum is certain over, however I find the demographics quite interesting.

You'll notice on here, that the majority of our membership are >> 30 y/o. Social media is the go-to for the younger generation. Eventually forums will become almost obsolete... superseded completely by social media.

In my opinion...

Have a +1 my friend. Beautifully put.

Surely Big Hat Logan being 12 years old brings down the average?

If social media is the place for your football talk the future isn’t bright with some the posts on the Aberdeen related pages worst than what is on here at times

Haha, the o/t chat was always better than the fitba. I love football, but in general its a sport for headbangers. Half the folk into football don't even realise it's a sport, like fish don't know they live in water. Its like some kind of reality. People who actually play or played don't tend to be so bad.

Forums aren't as popular as they were and are not part of social media tbh. Social media just doesn't provide sensible discussion. Its just exercises in groupthink and finger pointing. Actually, its me getting sick and tired of social media that brought me back to here. Forums are more limited, but you can somehow be more yourself. Still, seems busy enough on here, well there's still life at least. Did aberdeen-mad finally implode? Certainly deserves it, though at its peak it was great.

I don't think 'Social Media' is separate from Forums. It's just that forums were around far before the term 'Social Media' was coined.

Forums have always been a niche and specialist place to congregate and discuss topics.

It was once theorised (by SOTR? Can't remember) that with the rise of Facebook and Twitter, forums would die out, but i'm not seeing that.

We receive more traffic than ever before. Apart from because we're fucking ace, is because of the rapid increase and adoption of 'Smart phones' and affordable data plans.

People check the forum far more frequently than they ever have.

So you’re confident that the demise of Tup will have no consequences on here?

I think another underlooked phenomenon with forums is that you can somehow make 'pals' * and allegiances with folk who you'll probably never meet.

*I fully expect to get the piss taking out of me for using that word but it's true.

You definitely see battle lines being drawn when things go off on a tangent into abuse, as most threads invariably do on here, and sides get taken.

It's compulsive viewing at times. I spend way more time on this site reading stuff than I ever expected to and find myself awaiting various contributors weighing in with their take on things. Basically it's a fucking soap opera in here.
