Core Support And Size Of Club

Recommended Posts

I had a lively debate with some english football fans (Chelsea and fans, as i was at the spurs game on Sunday).

It was primarily how you classify your core support and subsequently how you determine the 'size' of the club.

My point was a core support is the attendances you get when you are not successful or challenging at the top end of the league.

They viewed Aberdeen as a smaller team than the likes of Millwall, although that argument was a shambles.

But they were right wound up when I told them Villa, Leeds are clubs with a better core support than Chelsea.

They did point out Aberdeen are the 5th largest team in Scotland based on avg attendance. Difficult to argue this one.

Anyway, a side subject as I can't be arsed wondering what McInnes may or may not do with West Brom,

But the general question is, how do you substantiate the size of the club??

Should have asked them were they were in 1992 when Chelsea were in the old second Divison

Comparing English and Scottish clubs is a non argument. London has a bigger population than the whole of Scotland so Mlilwall should be getting more through the gates than us but Millwall will never play in Europe never mind win a European trophy (or two). In relative/proportionate terms Aberdeen are bringing in more people per population than Millwall are.

In Scottish terms us, Hearts and Hibs are all around the same size in terms of core support with the Edinburgh clubs bringing more when times are good.

Hearts average is warped with the huge away supports us and the huns took to Murrayfield and i think Hibs are averaging around 18k. First season back in prem but impressive nonetheless.

We've taken 40 odd thousand to cup finals so there isn't much between the three.

Shows a lack of football knowledge to disregard Chelseas history in pre Roman times

Aside from Spurs have better list of past players Id say Chelsea were easily as successful as Spurs.

And since 2005 have since completely eclipsed them

Get back in the boozer min

Leave this dull stuff to the Razors of the hat

Unfortunately these days what determines the size of your club is money

Totally...A "Big" EPL club will pull in about 50mm quid in matchday income per year vs Aberdeen being maybe 8mm

That 42mm sounds like a huge gap, but TV and Merch will bring in 200mm for one of those EPL clubs.

If the SPL had been marketed in the same way as the EPL (that boat has sailed), the differences in gate money/matchday income would be pretty unimportant and success breeds support etc.

e.g. Aberdeen could (potentially) pull in 210mm a year vs a Chelsea pulling in 250mm pre year if we were in the same league.

Not as huge a gap in percentage terms.

That's why it is possible to "do a Leicester", because even a modestly supported club in the EPL will still have well over 100mm to spend in an average year.

The Sky money perpetuating the "greatest league in the world" myth, and the associated international market/fanbase of EPL clubs has changed the finances of the game so much, that any kind of comparison becomes nonsensical.

The arse cheeks ruined the SPL by fucking up TV deals in the 90s and hoarding the cash, meaning that their bigger gates actually did make a difference, and the rest is history.

That 42mm sounds like a huge gap right?

Thing is, TV and Merch will bring in 200mm for one of those EPL clubs.

A remarkable statistic for a Chelsea fan to come out with!

In 2001, I went to a Chelsea-Fulham derby at Stamford bridge. I was working in Reading at the time.

The scarf sellers outside the ground were selling t-shirts with the chelsea and rangers badges under the slogan "the blues brothers". My opinion of them has never recovered.

I didnt know Fulham were a london team until that night. We got off the train at fulham broadway, then walked along fulham road, by which time the penny was starting to drop

Get some of this:

The MM (Roman numerals) is financial specific notation and a single M is what is used in non-financial metric units.

mm (yes, small m) also commonly used in oil and gas for non financial e.g. mmboe mmbbl, mmcsf of production, many accountants also use mm to avoid confusion since MM could mean trillion, but mm can only ever mean million............so there's a total fucking derailment of conversation.

Was making a good point about gate money being a pretty minor component of EPL club finances I thought.
