Scotland Women

Woman's football shouldn't be on telly because it's not of the same standard as men's? - So should Scottish football not be on telly because it's not the same standard as the EPL?

Women's football shouldn't be covered because they don't get as big attendances as mens? - So should Aberdeen games not be covered because we don't get as big attendances as Rangers?

Some interesting points being made here.

I resist the PC pushing of females into male football. Female pundits. Female commentators. Women's games getting prime time coverage.

It's a minority of a minority sport. Wales and England just played to go to the world cup. In front of 5k spectators. Even women go to mens football.

Am I being sexist? No. Follow the attendances, viewing figures and sponsorship. It's a nothing game being pushed for reasons of equality rather than demand or interest.

So any sport or version of a sport shouldn't be shown on TV or get media coverage if it has small attendances in comparison to men's Football? Very blinkered view. The women's game is being pushed because there is a demand for it and quite rightly so. Sports for women need to be promoted not dismissed because of a superiority complex borne of outdated sexist beliefs.

Well done to the women for qualifying, but it really gets on my tits when they then cast it up to the men's game - as if women's football is even in the same universe, in terms of standards, fitness etc.  Women's football is so poor that you could be forgiven for thinking its actually  different game altogether.

Disabled or children's football is a closer / more apt comparison to women's football, than is men's football.

Also, sports coverage should be based on one thing only - public interest.  There is extremely little interest in women's football and, as usual, they only get coverage by hanging onto the coat tails of men / appealing to PC concepts.

I appreciate this is a pretty scathing post,l but if they don't want scathing remarks they shouldn't act the cunt.  Just be happy at qualifying for the joke tournament and leave it at that.

I'd guess that's largely down to the fact that the standard of goalkeeping in the women's game is universally pathetic.

Yes, if I was a coach in womens football, I would just teach them to punt the ball at the goals from anywhere in the park.  if you get the ball, just punt it at the opposition goal immediately.  Probably most that hit the target would go in.

Fair point, but is there a demand for it?

The acid test would be whether people would pay to watch it.  I, however, have no issue with it being on as a space filler and indeed if the standard goes up, then all good.

To move off on a tangent and then double back for a parallel, there was a while where I preferred watching women's tennis (relative to men's tennis, although in reality I am no huge fan of tennis in general), because they would actually run about and have rallies and play the game, as opposed to the mens game, which for a while was just blokes standing on the base line launching cannonballs at each other.  It seems to have improved.

So I suppose what I am saying is that women's sport can be entertaining enough, but the current standard of football is low.

BBC Alba is now going to be showing live women's games every Friday until the end of the season (season ends in November).

This week's is unfortunate as it clashes with the Scotland game. Celtic/Rangers is this week, surprised they didn't pick that game, instead it's Forfar v Hibs, which ain't a bad choice to be fair as Hibs are neck and neck for the title.

Anyway, good time to mention I'm off to Cyprus next week for Glasgow City's Champions League game? It's to be a rather toasty 31c at kick-off.

No wonder you don't want to rock the boat, late summer break in Cyprus.

Mind and keep your bar bill for expenses, the taxpayer will pick it up.

Scotland had a crowd of over 4,000 last week, biggest attendance they've had. Suggests it's growing in right direction.

Ach, it’s all relative really, so long as your measure women’s sports by how competitive it is on their own level. Women’s football, whether you agree or not is catching up with the more established women’s sports that gain a reasonable following like Golf and Tennis. I don’t see anything untoward about admiring a female athlete for being the best within their peers and that applies to football as much as any other sport. Comparing them to their male counterparts is pointless and elite level sportsmen & women will never be on a par due to simple genetics.

Met some of the English and Welsh lassies at a hotel last week and they got a lot of recognition which you’d never have seen in the past.

Might as well get behind the girls because our 'much more entertaining and watchable' men haven't been near a world cup for decades.

And what would be "rocking the boat". Writing an article about corruption when there's no proof?

Besides, I'm actually going to Cyprus as a freelance, so flights & brothel bills are out of my own pocket.

A demand for it? Really? It’s utterly shit. I’ve tried watching a few games and the standard is abysmal. The goalkeepers are like something out of some slapstick comedy programme.

Yeh, so you keep saying..

But Chewie wasn't saying the standard is great, he said there's a growing demand for it. Man Utd women had a crowd of 4,835 the other week - that's more than some Scottish Premiership sides pull in.

USA and Germany regularly pull in crowds of around 20,000 for internationals.

Over 45,000 were at the women's FA Cup final in May.

I don't know what TV figures BT Sport are getting for showing the women's games, but it's clearly enough to encourage them to keep doing it.

The Portland Thorns regularly get over 16,000 a game..they tend though t dwarf the other teams attendance in the NWSL .

Portland is a "soccer" crazy city though with The Timbers despite being mediocre have always sold out their MLS games.  and have a 5000 waiting list for season tickets.

I've no need to look any words up, since I generally understand how words are used in their correct context before using them myself.

As to your interpretation of what my argument might be, you're firmly in strawman territory, and while at first I thought you were deliberately being obtuse I'm now not sure that you do comprehend my argument.

Some clarifications, and don't expect this kind of spoon-feeding as a matter of routine...

My argument isn't that 'Feminism = Women can lift the same as blokes'. That is a straightforward misrepresentation of the argument as it was presented. Ergo... strawman. As I'm sure you're aware, there's no expectation on my part to defend an argument I never made. You may (or may not, I can't be sure in all honesty) notice that I said I was on board with the narrative, not the 'reality' that women can do anything men can do. A simple Google will reveal said narrative. It's popular with 'strong, independent women'.

"She looked up at me and said, “Whatever a man can do, a woman can do, and usually do it a whole lot better.”

Which is true. "

If you've ever spoken to a third wave, man-hating (a redundancy) Feminist you'll get that narrative over and over.

My actual argument, once again... and I can only clarify this so many times before I guess I have to concede that you're simply not capable of understanding it... my argument is that men are, in general, physically stronger (yes, that does mean that, in general, men can lift heavier weights), as a result of a million years of biological natural selection. Dimorphism in humans has led to males being larger, stronger, and more capable of physical feats than the female, for all the reasons you would expect, and I'm not listing them all here.

That's a basic evolutionary, self-evident (to anyone with working eyes) fact that has nothing to do with personal opinion or Feminism.

Lol. I think you may have lost the plot.

Mate. 5,000 watching Wales v England in a world cup qualifying match. I'm sure when I was wee I can remember about 60 of us watching 2 dogs fuck. It's only just up from that.

What a load of pish.

There's all sorts on telly with hardly anyone watching it, Rugby, Hockey, Basketball all sorts. Why on earth would women's football need to pass some special measure no other sports do?

The reverse fixture in April when England were the home team had over 25,500 at it.

Considering you're a Hearts fan, watching two dogs fuck is probably a step up from what you're used to watching.
