Was he really underrated though? I always seem to recall Mason being viewed positively which wasn't always the case with Bett...incredible we were spoiled.

He struggled in later years I thought, he argued with the faithful a few times I believe.  Have to say his early days, what a player, incredible

McKimmie was a good player, but a shit captain. To be fair though he was following in the footsteps of Miller and McLeish, and at a time when Aberdeen were on a downward spiral, so was on a hiding to nothing.

 

But, was a very decent full-back for the Dons.

 

I remember when he was a columnist with the EE (he maybe still is, not read it in years). I was a young scamp doing work experience, and McKimmie came in to do his column, and was told that the EE had been running a survey with readers, the results had come in, and out of every columnist the paper had, his had been voted the worst. He was genuinely devastated - felt a bit sorry for him.

Bett was a class above Mason. But I always thought he was a class above most.

Bett came to us from Akranes in Iceland didn’t he? I always wondered how he ended up playing there after he left Rangers. Was his wife from there?

 

Even then it just seemed like he would have been head and shoulders above the standard that probably existed there back then. Although if I mind right, even back then Scotland only just scraping past Iceland in a qualifier.
