Fan Loyalty

Recommended Posts

A few years back I met up with a old mate who I went to games with in the late 60s. It was well over 20 years since I'd seen him and I was surprised to hear that he had given up on Aberdeen and hadn't been to Pittodrie for many years and would never go back. I was totally shocked as he was probably the most fervent supporter in our group at that time.

It shows that everyone has a limit of resiliency as to how far their loyalty can be stretched. I am seriously beginning to question mine after all the fiascos of the last few years.

I wonder if this debacle will lead to other supporters taking the same approach as him, leading to a reduction in the overall fan base.

Just how elastic are the fans tolerance limits relating to recent events?

I think a lot of folk just become apathetic as they get older, and some lads kicking a fitba about doesn't seem as important anymore. And sitting in the freezing cold becomes less appealing as you get older. And you eventually have yer fill of hun refs and the general bias towards Glasgow in every aspect of the game.

I do think after a certain amount of years of watching the same games 4x a season and ending up 40+ points behind the usual 2 and winning fuck all it can become a bit demotivating.

I don’t make as many games these days, but I always love(D!) the European games or playing a lower league side cause I’m sick of the fucking sight of Aberdeen v kilmarnock/st mirren/motherwell

I don't care about the scores anymore, even Darvel didn't bother me. I'll always support the dons, know we have little chance of winning anything but it's in the blood. The last hun game seeing the red shed bouncing was a breath of fresh air, knowing there's young kids with the same enthusiasm I used to have, was brilliant to see. We all know we're crap but maybe just maybe we will have success one day, when it happens it will put into shade any feelings a gloryhunter has, it will be from the heart and soul, not because you have nothing else in your sad life to cling to.

If you stop supporting your team then they you were never a fan in the first place.

Being a fan isn’t the same as being a smack head 🤣 once a smack head always a smack head

You can stop being a fan (no longer be one) doesn’t mean you weren’t ’fanatical’ before.

I was the same until darvel, that was not enjoyable.

cup games > euro games > league games (although another relegation battle this season should be quite exciting.

Remember when folk used to moan after a 1-0 win under Del!!

Definitely think as you get older you do start to become more apathetic. Paying 30 odd quid to watch shite fitba in the freezing cold isn't as appealing and life gets in the way more. From about 18-28 I'd be going every week at home and a lot of aways.

I'm now in my 30s and have been brought up with the OF's dominance and some absolute dross of Aberdeen teams, couldn't give a flying fuck about the league apart from the dons.

The 07/08 Euro run, the league cup win and the peak Mcinnes era has been the only bright spots as my time as a dons fan. Still think we'll look back when the vermin were in the lower leagues as a missed opportunity. Especially that season when Deila was at Celtic.

Things will come good again though, although he's a twat we do have a chairman with the right motivation for the club, it just needs to be run better than it is the now.

I have only been to a couple of games this season and only a few the last few seasons. Had a season ticket for around 28 years, with a year or two gap during the Mcghee era.

Why have I stopped going... in all honesty, ever since the huns got promoted into the league then I started lose interest. Cant explain why, just didnt feel the same. Still go to odd games and pay for redtv etc, but just hasnt been the same for me. The Cormack era hasn't really enticed me to go back either.

You'll outlive me which is a huge positive.

I seen us winning leagues and coming back from the death against Bayern Munich to beat them, noise and atmosphere that night will never be beaten. Used to think being in cup finals every year was the norm. Lived through the rise of the casual movement, no more getting bullied by the old firm, great days. Love the dons, gave me so many memories.

We're in a bad place right now but we'll be back, it's a great club and City, I agree Cormack is the right guy, just need a little faith.

Yes, I agree, eventually the extreme fanatic phase gives way to various levels of apathy, but some interest is always there, it probably never completely erodes.

In my case, my interest had a boost some time ago with being able to see games on SKY and the internet, although it took a bit of a hammering during McGhee's tenure. Recent events are far worse with the huge amount of humiliation from the team not appearing to care.

If that's the best that these clueless, mercenary dead beats can offer, why should I care as they obviously don't. There have no loyalty to the the supporters or the club.
