We walked past all the buses after the Athens match and went for a drink near the stadium. I always try to avoid being herded on these buses. I did go on the bus after Dnipro and the first Rijeka match but we had no option, but in both of these games we made our own way to the stadium.

At Athens. I, and around eight others, had tickets for Sector 44 provided by the club. It turned out to be the home end and they wouldn't let us in. I ended up missing the first 20 minutes as they first took us round to Sector 35 (where some plain clothes Dons fans were located), then back to Sector 44, before finally taking us underneath the stadium and into Sector 47 and 48.

Forgotten what my point was now...

How did you get on walking to the game in Dnipro? Thought that was a dodgy as fuck gaff tbh and I was teetotal that trip. Rough as fuck place

Everything was fine in Dnipro pre-match, we were drinking in the centre (including with the first Mrs Calderwood and daughter) in the afternoon of the game, and started moving towards the stadium later but stopping off for more drinks on the way.

There was a group of around ten of us, but we ended up being pushed for time, so started running towards the stadium and we got split up. The pavement was uneven and it was dark, and with the alcohol taking effect, I made a wrong step and ended up flat on my face! Some Dnipro fans helped me up.

I was only with one other person at this time, and we arrived at the home end and had to walk round. I arrived just as the stadium announcer was saying, "Number 7, Christopher Clark" in a Russian sounding English accent.

After the game, you'll recall, we were boarded in buses that reminded of the buses the paparazzi were held on after Diana was killed in Paris.

We were all shipped off to the Dnipro Hotel, which overlooked the river, where most (including my group), but not all, were staying. A police cordon was place round the entrance, and most of the post-match celebrations took place in the hotel.

Later, I and group of three of four others, decided we wanted to return to the city centre. The police cordon now had police with their hats titled right back in a relaxed manner, and didn't prevent you walking through.

We hadn't got 100 metres round the corner, when a car appeared, did like a donut manoeuvre, and a guy flung open the door and brandished what looked like a samurai sword in the air at us. I consulted with the group and indicated that we should probably return to the hotel which we did in double quick time.

I remember someone had had their teeth knocked out and was saying they were Sylvester the Cat or Daffy Duck or something. The must've faced a costly dental bill on their return though.

Apart from St Pauli in 1999, which was a friendly, it was my first proper overseas Euro trip, and as a festering old ex-Hun, now Tim 'rock star' once sang, the first cut is the deepest. No Euro trip since had quite matched the Dnipro trip.

Also, we missed the train from Kiev down to Dnipro and ended up getting a taxi down with bags of alcohol to assist the journey. The driver was the doppelganger of Jimmy Calderwood, and he drove back down to Dnipro two days later to drive us back. It was a 12 hour round trip (6 hours each way) between Kiev and Dnipro!

I remember we also drank with Everton fans in Kiev who had returned from Metalist Kharkiv.

Whoops, too long and off-topic, apologies...

Buses aren't for everyone?

But I love buses, I travel up and down the UK and beyond many times every year!

I suppose my point is that being unnecessarily forced on a bus for "your own safety" isn't appreciated.

I've never had any problems making my own way there, but maybe if all Dons fans made their own way then there would be trouble I suppose so probably happy with the status quo* as it stands...

*Yes I love Down Down too but not so much Marguerita Time

Was my mate that lost his teeth 😄 About 150 Dnipro fans attacked the hotel we were drinking at at around 1am.  Was a hairy walk back to our apartment after.

Great trip though - definitely up there as one of the best.

And another mate lost a finger.

Who knew going abroad with the Dons was so dangerous .

I almost lost a finger on Saturday in pub, pint glass lacerating me at end of a long day's scoofing.
Can see right into my finger. Just back from hospital, too late to stitch.
Back to see the orthopaedic suregeon on Friday 12 midday.
Possibly still in toon straight fae pub job.
Def stabilsation required regardless.
