Anyone on here actually play?

I’ve been struggling with driver ever since I started 2.5 years ago. Considering just ditching the fucking thing and using a 3/5 wood off the tee.

What issues you having?

My driver issues come when I'm swinging too quickly and trying to hit it as hard as I can.

Thought about a mini driver (great actress)? I ditched the driver as I just wasn’t hitting it. Callaway and Taylormade do them. I use a Taylormade 300

Goes fucking anywhere. Can have good days and bad days however but driver bad days are a lot more common and killing my score.

I’m aware of the issue, it’s me. Went for lessons at Newmacher so learned essentially you notice your swing faults more with a driver due to its length/speed of swing etc. Working on it but it’s fucking annoying.

You’re bang on about not trying to hit it into space however. Played a doubles match yesterday and got spanked by a boy who didn’t hit it any distance, just clipped his driver a steady 200 but never made mistakes. Compared to me and my playing partner spraying it all over the shop.

Read my mind. Been looking this morning and it seems like it’s geared towards boys like me who can’t hit a driver. I’m 5ft 9 so a standard driver feels massive. Don’t think I’d lose any distance either, it’s rare I even catch my driver clean.

Used a mini driver in the past for more control.  Dont get too excited - its essentially a 3wd with a shorter shaft but did the trick for me. (Taylormade 12deg fwiw).  Only issue is they do tend to go high in the wind.

If you ever develop a tee shot that you can rely on whether its a driver, 3, 5, a rescue, even a long iron stick with it.  As your opponent showed you, safely 200yds on the fairway is worth way more than an extra 40yds just a couple of degrees off it.  Even on a tougher longer par 4 you'll often find the second shot is just a repetition of the 1st.

Ive played on and off for years. Never really got on with the driver. I got back into the game a few years ago and tried for a couple years to sort it with the driver - Had good days and bad days, but got fed up with the more bad. Mostly keep the ball on the fairway now, and haven’t really lost much - if any - distance. I was looking for a Brnr, but they were sold out brand new, and stupid prices used. So I bought the 300 used on eBay on a whim and loved it from the off. I’ve since tried the Brnr, but didn’t like the shaft it comes with. The Callaway gets cracking reviews - would love to try it, as it Callaway woods I use.

ps I’ve a mate who is shorter than you, who uses a full length driver and smacks it 300 plus. Wee dick

Not quite. Much larger head, and lower loft.

Aye, agree with you in regards to being safe 200 yards down is the name of the game. Went round Kemnay last year and didn’t take the driver out the bag once and had a really good score (for me) until a bit of a blow up on the last 2 (4 putt on the last had me considering all sorts).

The Brnr is beautiful looking I think, never actually realised there was the 300 so that’s a good option to try before taking the plunge on the Brnr or mini callaway. Did you lose much distance with the 300 good hits compared to proper driver good hits?

Aye I know a few small bastards who hit it a bomb. Just an excuse for me 😂

I haven't lost much at all. Maybe 10-15 yards tops. What I have found is that the 300 rolls a lot, which helps. I'm on the fairway most times as well, so not having to take my medicine and plop a ball out from behind a tree as much as I was before. Saving me loads of strokes.

the 300 seems to have jumped in price in the 2nd hand market now, with some not much cheaper than a 2nd hand brnr. Both def worth a shot. The latest brnr still seems to be in stock new online in a few places. Though, the advantage of buying it second hand is that you'll probably get your cash back if you decide you don't like it...

Yeah, think I’ll have a look at that and the callaway model.

If successful I can sell my current driver anyway.

Good to hear someone has tried these clubs and had success. I’m able to piece together rounds around 80ish sometimes at Inverurie but that’s purely due to the fact the front 9 is wide open and then 10-13 you don’t need a driver off the tee. I’m just not steady enough with it and when it’s bad I lose confidence and just can’t ever get it back during a round.

I've cut 3 off my handicap since giving up the driver at the start of the season, so def worth a go.

Let me know what you decide on, especially if you get the callaway!

An obvious one is to hit the driving range, try and vary the strength/speed of the swing - slow it down and don’t try and belt it.
Also vary the height of the tee and thus figure out what works for you - will take a few visits though.

Is the correct answer.

Had a poor round the other day off the tee so went to range and sorted myself out trying various combinations until ball went straight.

Use castle tees once you find the right height for you.

i also find using a yellow ball really annoys the better golfers so have plenty of them in your bag. It puts them off their game.

Going to try the driver at the range this weekend but leaning towards getting the Taylormade 300. The newer ones are great looking but 400 quid is mental for a 15 handicapper IMO.

My dad used to use a shorter driver. I tried it and got on well with it but after going for a lesson I was essentially told due to the size of head and shortness of shaft that the shaft becomes rock solid. Makes me think mini-driver is maybe spot on.

Get a lesson before getting a new club.
