Phil Foden has heaps of ability. He's not yet worked out how to translate that ability in to an end product consistently though. Maddison is a more effective player at the moment imo. Foden has more ability though and should definitely become a much better player. Link to comment

I think given the same opportunity as Mason Mount he could have certainly had the same if not more impact than him. For Man City, he's been very good, for this tournament though: - Started against Croatia and can only recall one cut inside and hit the post Started against Scotland and did nothing. Not in the sqaud v Czech's Unused sub against Germany and Ukraine, where others showed up better 25 minutes against Denmark when he did nothing. Not in the squad last night (reported to be injured) Link to comment

I was surprised by how tiny he looked in the games. seemed like he was struggling to cope with the physicality so you do wonder if he has been carrying a knock Link to comment

Foden scored 3 in 13 in the Champions League in the run up to the final. Playing at a higher level consistently than Maddison. Foden was named in Champions League Team of the Season and nominated for both PFA Player of the year and PFA Young Player of the Year, winning the Young Player Award. Cant agree that Maddison is more effective to be honest but each to their own. Link to comment

I'm not sure they are directly comparable though as they seem to be different style of midfielders Link to comment

The fact Foden is one of the main players at Man City says it all. Would Maddison play in as many of the big games at Man City if he was there? I doubt he would at this moment in time. Could also factor in Maddison takes free kicks at Leicester whereas Foden rarely does for Man City. Link to comment

Hayes and Maddison wide. McGinn on the bench. Hayes played on the right hand side. Link to comment

strachanmcgheegoal
Funny the way this thread has gone. I was saying to the loon last night that there were shades of McInnes-esp AFC about Engurlund last night. Stones, Maguire, Rice and Phillips surely had the MVP between them but they'd no out ball. They needed to be 30yards up the pitch away from trouble and actually creating something instead. They basically conceded 2/3rds of the pitch to Italy. Unless they'd convinced themselves that they would win on penalties which Id suggest was somewhat short sighted, short memoried of them. It was that Madison Number 10 coming short they needed (and Sterling and Kane to do one). Accept Pickford wasn't really tested - 2 very good saves apart - but thankfully you don't win games trying to defend for 89 minutes. Thats where I saw the similarity. Link to comment

SImilarly to McInnes last few seasons at Aberdeen, we played good stuff till we led then sat back and he tried to manage the game out, rather than just keep the foot on the gas and try to "win" the game. Pretty much what I felt England did last night as well. Arguably their most creative player on the bench. Link to comment

They thought they were on the verge of history and decided all they had to do was not allow Italy to score. It almost worked as well. Broadly agree, but I don't think it was through fear. It's quite natural to be more conservative when you've got something to hold onto, and gung ho when you've nothing to lose. Link to comment
