BrianFaePerth
Having lived in 2 of the top 4, for me it has to be the events that the cities put on. The people in charge of Vienna actually seem to care about its inhabitants and have festivals for all sorts. Central to it all is food and booze, always a winner. Link to comment

Dal Riata Don
Melbourne [been on holiday & have several friends from there] is very well laid out. It's good for business and leisure. Lot's of facilities for each, good public transport, very drivable and lots of events seemed to be on each day. It also had 'character' so didnae suffer from what we might call Canberra [boring-soul-less] syndrome. Link to comment
cruzcampo3
A decent Football Stadium Link to comment

Clydeside_Sheep
Looking at the top 5 list, it seems resoundingly clear that British Colonies make good cities. Link to comment

Dynamo
Cafe culture. Nicer weather (also Melbourne can get too hot, was 44 when I was there). Water (nice river or by the coast), interesting landmarks. Good transport. Link to comment
Clydeside_Sheep
Another great case for independence. Alas Scotland doesnt have the weather or culture for great cities. PS - Scotland isnt a colony. Link to comment

Aye Edinburgh isn't currently hosting one of the worlds biggest cultural festivals. Don't think Toronto has great weather in the winter.... Link to comment

Parklife
When i think of my favourite cities, they're all so different: Barcelona: Stunning architecture, great weather, incredible beach, wonderful sport, a fiercely passionate culture and amazing nightlife. All of this while still having a bit of a gritty, realism intertwined through all of the above. Rome: The history is incomparable to anywhere on the planet, the weather (again) is fantastic and the nightlife as good as Barca. Again though, it has that gritty realism to it. It's not too up itself and pretentious. Berlin: Much like Rome, there's so much to see and do. While the beers, both variety and quality, available in bars is better than anywhere else i've been. It's a city that embraces it's history, rather than hiding from it. I think what makes a great city, to me anyway, is a combination of the history, the culture and the general "feel" of the place. The vibe of an evening in all of the 3 places above is brilliant. Bars are packed with ordinary folk (not 70% pretentious wanks like in Edi or London) and as such the atmosphere within them is good. It's easy to interact with the locals and rarely will you encounter trouble (unless you're a bit of a cunt). Link to comment
Bluto10
I think the variety of beers in Germany as a whole is very limited. Link to comment

Bluto10
I agree. Just saying German beer culture is very German. Although it is getting better. Link to comment

looksgoodinred
i wouldn't have ranked Toronto top 5/6 in the world. for liveability (infrastructure, getting around, housing costs), i'd have rated Montreal higher. but what do i know. Link to comment
