Since the future is not known, it's the prospective future that is making some uncomfortable. They don't want to hear a bad future. I think a bad future can only be avoided/ mitigated by asking the right questions in the present. That's what I think. People in general don't want to accept the "new normal" so don't want to think in any depth about it. "The vaccines will work, we'll be back to normal by July" is comforting even if there is no real evidence for it. My hope is that as we progress through the winter and into spring, mass vaccinations will be well underway and, as the better weather comes and the virus prevalence lowers, we'll be in a better position to keep it low (due to the large number of people vaccinated). We look to be finally restricting international travel, so shouldn't be importing cases either. We'll then be in a position where we can get to some sort of normality (fans at games, pubs open, etc), while the full country (more or less) is vaccinated. From then we'll hopefully get to normal (excluding travel) by autumn. Obviously that all depends on the vaccine roll out going well (which it appears to be so far) and the vaccines being effective (unknown). Link to comment

I appreciate that might fuck up any benefits or grants you are in receipt of just now but wondered what was the better of the two options? I've been job hunting Buzz. Interview on the 29th to become an NHS hero. Despite what everyone tells you there are fuck all jobs out there. Also if I'm honest on applications/cvs it's pretty obvious I'm going to fuck off as soon as things change so I'm generally ruled out from any permanent contract jobs. Morrison's were honest enough to say that. Did the parcels for a bit before Christmas but the core plugs have gone in my van and it's uneconomical to repair. Tried to get another but they ask to see your books for a lease and mine are obviously a disaster so that's fucked. I can use the wife's motor when my own work picks up but it's no good for parcels. If I get this job on the 29th I'll be golden but we live in strange times where we've closed the majority of businesses in the country, encourage people to "stay home" then force people to try and find jobs in amongst it all. I don't think it's right that any parent be tasked with having to teach kids, especially at early primary school years with the basics of reading, writing and numeracy. Some parents might be barely literate themselves. I don't know how we get them back into school so that everyone feels safe though. Smaller classes, attendance on alternate days, shorter days so it's a case of being in class then home (limited break times and opportunities to socialise - sounds a bit draconian tbf)? Fuck knows. It's a tough one for all involved. Link to comment

Ten Caat
16 hours ago, Parklife said: Thanks for the clarification. When you say "fully mutate", what does that mean? They say one of the Covid strains has 15 mutations. How close is that to fully mutating? 17 mutations of covid are known. Viruses come in many different "forms"......but they all need to infect a host living organism to survive. Parasites in other words. However if they didn't mutate....the host organism would eventually develop its own resistance to the virus and it would die off. So they mutate....developing different properties to the original virus that enable them to overcome or "defeat/bamboozle" the defence mechanisms of the host. In humans this is the immune system. And artificially boosted by immunisations in certain cases. Some never need to fully mutate, just create new ways of avoiding the immune system. Some viruses attach themselves to the outside of a cell and for want of a better phrase "suck it dry" to gain whatever "nutrition" it needs to survive and most importantly..to multiply. Others (such as HIV) are retroviruses...they need to actually penetrate into the cell and inserts its own RNA into the cell's DNA to actively alter that cell to allow it to then reproduce. The flu virus fully mutates. Ie by the end of its mutating cycle...you end up with essentially a totally new virus that has none of the original "properties" of the original virus. It will still cause the same symptoms as the original virus. It's just finding different ways at a nanoscopic level to ensure its survival. But once in a blue moon it will (purely by chance) have a property at this level that causes us massive problems...maybe make it suddenly massively more transmissable or become randomly more deadly (think of the Spanish flu in 1918) The problem we have with covid is because it is mutating so rapidly. And because it is brand new.....we knew nothing about it's properties to begin with and as fast as the scientist as finding out about them....bang a new mutation is discovered with different properties. The South African and especially Brazilian mutations are extremely worrying as it looks very much like the vaccines that have just been rolled out may not be effective against them at all.
