Top 9 European teams are seeded for the 2010 WC Qualifiers according to BBC, surely we'd be a shoe in for that if we beat Italy?

I think this is the last update of the rankings before the draw is made, though I could be wrong, which puts us in pot two. Only one team qualifies automatically from each group so we'll still need to hope for a decent draw.

Yes, but the 2nd placed team with the lowest amount of points misses out on a play-off place.

Aye. As BTR said though one of the second placed teams will miss out on even the playoffs. Bit of a poor show really but with 17 places to give out it's hard to see how else they could've done it.

 

Unless they just decided to give us a bye since we've done so well in the group of death and just went with 8 groups

Looking at the rankings there's no way it could be anywhere near as difficult as the Euro 2008 group. Worst case scenario using those rankings would be something like Italy, Turkey, Slovakia, Slovenia and Kazakhstan.

worst case scenario could see us with Italy, Denmark, Slovakia, Belarus and Montenegro. That pot 2 looks a beast, glad we can avoid those sides (should things stay this way for the new next qualifiers).

Reckon that Czech Rep wouldn't be that bad from Pot 1. Wouldn't fancy Bulgaria from Pot 3 or Austria from Pot 5.

Why not? They're terrible. Absolutely abysmal. Their own fans have started a petition asking UEFA to withdraw them from Euro 2008
