Atmosphere at EPL grounds

Recommended Posts

Decibel meter readings taken across home matches for all Premier League teams during August and September, showed that the loudest home crowd was on Wearside.

Average peak volume of the Sunderland crowd at home reaches 129.2 decibels - louder than a rock concert (115 decibels) and almost as loud as an air raid siren/military jet (130 decibels).

As a volume of 110-115 decibels can cause hearing damage after just 15 minutes, football fans are being advised to wear ear protection if they want to hear the referees whistle clearly across their supporting career.

The findings are especially embarrassing for Arsenal and Manchester United, whose grounds dwarf the 49,000-seater Sunderland home ground by 11,000 and 21,000 seats respectively.

Quietest home fans were Fulham who could only muster an average maximum volume of 115.4 decibels at home.

And although not the loudest, Everton fans proved that they have the stamina to keep it up all match. Their chants were the most frequent (one every three minutes on average) and longest (52 seconds each on average) of all teams studied.

The ear-bending research was commissioned by 118118 who are searching for the best and loudest football chants in the country.

Decibel readings were taken across key points in each match - players emerging from the tunnel, kickoff, when goals were scored, just after the start of the second half and the final five minutes of each game.

William Ostrom from 118 118 said: "Supporting your team is a loud business; our researchers got quite an ear-bashing. But the power of the team chant is undeniable. Perhaps it's one of the reasons Sunderland got promotion last season."

No shocks really, Sunderland and Fulham got voted best and worst fans recently by opposition supporters, bearing this survey out. Spurs are always well thought of as well. Surprising to see the Mags so far down, and Birmingham have tremendous fans.

EDIT:

Total load of bollocks.
Well we'll just have to disagree :dontknow:

When they did the survey its going to depend who the home team's playing and what stands are being monitored. Can you imagine recording the noise from the mainstand at Pittodrie tonight for example as opposed to the South Stand versus Rangers.

What about Manchester Utd near the bottom; surely one of the most vocal sets of supporters with great songs when the situation dictates. Old Trafford isn't always a morgue for prawn sandwich munchers. What about Liverpool loitering near the bottom, is Anfield one of the quieter grounds? And I would have thought Newcastle would have been far higher, along with Portsmouth, who especially two seasons ago would sing for practically the whole game.

And as for Tottenham being second, wow.......a few chants of "Yid Army" doesn't constitute a noisy stadium whenever I've been there.

I've been to:

Leeds

Tottenham

West Ham

Charlton

QPR

Fulham

Crystal Palace

Brentford (only went to do the four pubs on each corner of the ground)

Spurs was by far the noisest. They were playing Villa, and the fans were extremely vociferous. Leeds and West Ham were also good.

It was a two month survey LS, I presume to take account of what you say. I haven't been to WHL, but it's always up there as one of the best away grounds amongst the guffies. Liverpool are also acknowledged as being pretty poor generally, certainly in relation to most of the others. I can't vouch for all stadiums, like I say, just that Magpies and Brimmies seemed surprisingly low, mind you crowds have been poor at StAndrews this season which might explain them a little.

According to a few lads in our supporters club that goes to Newcastle games - Pittodrie is miles better unless a massive game.

I've been to St. James a few times and I'd agree - the atmosphere is incredibly flat! Its a really strange atmosphere, there is no edge like you'd encounter at an Aberdeen vs Rangers/Dundee United match.

Another thing I couldn't believe was the fact the away supporters aren't segregated on exit from the stadium.... I was sitting in the Man United end on one occasion and nearly shat my pants as, following the final whistle, we stepped outside and were immediately surrounded by hordes of Newcastle fans! To my complete surprise not a single cross word was uttered between the rival supporters.... very strange!

Even at Newcastle & Man United the prawn sandwich brigade clearly now dominate....

Incidentally, sitting in with Manchester United supporters I was amazed how few were actually from Manchester... or even northern England! There were tonnes of Scots & Irish, with londoners being the next best represented in number. I had to laugh when I heard these guys singing songs about Manchester City, as though they were Moss Side born and bred!

most games i watch from the "worlds greatest league" are pish and the atmosphere is always flat.

Then don't watch it then.

You've moaned about it - and the champions league - on here for ages and yet you always seem to have watched the games. If it really displeases you that much, get yourself a hobby so you don't have to watch it.

if you read the post agin you will see i said most games. the point of my post was more to show that the EPL is not as good as its made out to be.

I 100% agree with that. But lets be honest, you do like a good old moan about both the Premiership (or whatever the ***k it's called these days) and Champions League... I just wonder why you bother, no offence meant.

i dont actually watch that much of any of them nowadays due to the fact i hate the hype that goes along with it

i have cancelled sky sports so dont see many premiership games. so i dont really bother with it, still doesnt change the fact that both comeptitions are overhyped bull sh*t.

and yes your are right i do like a good moan.

Bullsh1t is a bit strong i think. You get good and bad games in both, as you do in every competition in top level senior football. Both undoubtedly overhyped, but after watching Aberdeen, it's rather nice watching some "real" football teams! :hysterical:

For better or worse I've never been to an EPL game

From tv alone, Everton fans always seem to be right up for it. Enjoy seeing their goals cos the fans always seem to go ***king mental.

I agree stonester. Have a soft spot for them, not just cause of mcfadden McFadden. Like to see West Ham goals for the same reason.

Ha, it's funny but true. The only time I've had aggro was coming out of Eastlands through the Citeh fans (I'd parked wrong side), son had a Bolton top on, I'm wearing a Scotland jacket, we've been soundly hammered for 90 minutes but get an injury time penalty to steal the points 1-0. 6'6" 20 stone thug spots us among all the blue shirts and kindly shouts on his way past "Scottish chunt" The Bolton bit didn't matter :hysterical:

'Tis strange though, considering the reputation of the English.
