I think his whole being linked with the England job was just a massive ego trip for him. He was never going to take it but just liked lapping up all the england fans masturbating over his potential appointment. Had talks with the FA then said no thanks, a wee up yours to the whole media shebang that would have inevitably seen his demise. They seem to think that by appointing a coach who has had glittering success all over europe(mourinho, capello, scolari) that this will bring them what they laughably crave for so much. What they fail to realise is that you can polish a turd but it's still a turd!

Funniest for me is that Jose is exactly the type of manager who England need right now, one who isn't scared to drop big names (Shevchenko at Chelsea for example) and who would sort out egos in the squad and get them working hard as a team. England have capable players and hope the next manager can't get them playing as a team or they might do very very well.

You can't say that. He loves living in London, his family is settled here, his children are happy in their school, and he has many friends. He was gutted when the Chelsea situation went wrong, and mentioned all those things why he didn't want to leave the city. He would be the ideal man for the job, and he knows it, but with the possibility of the Barcelona position coming available in a year or so, he realises he can't make a career mistake taking on England.

He'd relish the chance to manage Terry, Lampard, and Cole again, but would also like to take on the challenge of motivating, gelling-together, and turning into a World class team the rest of Englands headless chickens.

Its a good thing for the rest of us that he doesn't take the England job.

I think he also said he would only ever manage Portugal at International level didn't he?

i think the media played this up too much down south. he's not exactly going to say i hate living in England is he.

Morinho is an intelligent guy and knows how to handle the english media. he had them on tenderhooks about taking the post up but really i dont think he ever had any intention of taking it.

Yes you can say that.

He always maintained he wanted his next job to be a club job.... he also has always said that his last job in football would be at international level, probably Portugal.

Incidentally, all his family have moved back to Setubal.

Unless Rico is Jose Mourinho you cannot say " he was never going to take it" .

he can, and I did about 3 weeks ago when i said it was in the portuguese papers that he wasnt interested but the media spin over here never actually reported him saying the only national team he ever wanted to manage was portugal. he thinks a national manager should be from that country, so " he was never going to take it"

Jamie Redknapp (that voice of authority) was on Sky Sports a few minutes ago questioning whether or not England should now go for Capello - claiming he doesn't seem to like English players - hasn't signed one, got rid of Owen quickly and only played Beckham when he 'realised he needed him'. Seems a strange logic to rule him out as England manager. Doubt he has ever signed a Scot either, but don't think too many of us would have too many qualms about him taking over at Hampden....
