Ronaldo's Free-kick

Recommended Posts

Very very good,

How he can hit the bottom of the ball so hard and still get dip like that is amazing.

On current form the best player on the planet.

I've just been doing a project on it for my uni course and its all about topspin and sidespin. Quite interesting. We used a clip of his freekick vs Sunderland to demonstrate it. If we weren't presenting it tomorrow we'd probably have to include tonight's one. Perfect example of topspin

So how you getting topspin on it when he hits the bottom of the ball and even takes a small divit out of the pitch.

You would think it would generate backspin making the ball go up not dip.

Not entirely sure, I had a different part of the project but basically he connects with the ball as his foot is going downwards. You couldn't see it properly on MOTD now but if you watch it slowed down he connects almost instantaneously before his foot touches the ground. Beckham also does this but with sidespin as well and not as much pace.

There was a big article about this in a paper the other week (The Independent?). In a nutshell, he has great technique but can only do what he does because of the type of ball being used. His technique wouldnt have worked on a ball 20 years ago to the same extent.

The ball does play a part, but I don't see many other players coming close to his dead ball ability at the moment.

I read somewhere it's something to do with not putting any spin on the ball that's the secret. If you watch the clip you'll see the ball barely rotates at all, and anyone who's a golfer knows, spin is the secret to keeping the ball in the air. It's like a knuckle ball in baseball.

Just had a look at the Carlos free-kick. I'd forgotten how far out he was too. Immense.

It was a very good free-kick, but the best ever? Hardly.

I honestly don't believe that Ronaldo is the free-kick genius that people make him out to be - more often than not, his attempts end up sailing miles over.

Some other candidates:

Seedorf (Milan) vs. Parma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXDLmQIJUhU

Mikael Nilsson (IFK Gothenburg) vs. PSV Eindhoven: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBM0ONXD_Lw

And of course, the aforementioned Robert Carlos effort in the Umbro Tournament.

EDIT: Fixed Link.

1 min 6, him against man city. anyone gonna say Ronaldo's was better? - and its in the premiership aswell. Sky sports match choice last night found 5 that were better, this is the only one they mentioned that i can find.

top 10 freekicks -

Juninho's should be higher, pisses on Ronaldos effort. The the no1 is pretty special

I just dont reckon Ronaldos one was THAT amazing. Great technique to get it up and down from that range, but the ones in that vid are awesome.

hmmm, you give Lyon a freekick ANYWHERE within about 35 yards of your goal...you may aswell just pick up the ball and take the kick off.

Juninho, doesnt, miss.

this is worth watchin just to zoom to 1:50 and watch the keepers reaction when Juninho misses a penalty but nets the rebound - PRICELESS
