johnstrac
If the clubs all stuck together and dropped the wages by 80% then the players would have to suck it up.Most of them wouldn't get another job for love or money.Trouble is one club would blink first. Link to comment

van basten 9
the likes of sol campbell and harry kewell (great player at leeds) were bought on the cheap and ive no doubt it reflects on their wage packets. obviously kewell has been a waste of time but campbell has been immense for pompey. bland_flabbis
Why would any club with financial clout, large fanbase and huge sponsorship want to lower its potential success? Players get market value. End of. Saying that something represents market value isn't necessarily the same thing as saying that it's right. Market forces are just a means to an end and in certain situations they can produce detrimental outcomes. Personally I think football is one of those situations due to the fact that the most profitable course of action for players and clubs isn't the best outcome for fans. At present we have historically low attendances for professional Scottish football and the primary reason is that ticket prices have to be set at ludicrously high levels to accommodate the players' wage demands. Even at the level of Manchester United and Real Madrid - where attendances are never a problem - your average fan has been squeezed out due to the financial cost associated with going to games.
