Seb Coe Wants Fergie To Lead Team Gb

Recommended Posts

The Olympics and football just don't seem right together anyway. However it looks like there's going to be a British team at 2012 so I'd rather a non-English manager who might be less keen on picking only English players.

As I understand it there will only be English players used so they might as well stick with an English manager.

I find the thought of "Team GB" in the football very strange but if it has to happen, surely there will be much more outcry if he DIDN'T at least get asked!

:dontknow:

I don't think there will be an outcry anyway. No-one really gives a hoot about football at the Olympics anyway.

I'm sure the Dutch and Brazillian teams will dissagree with you.

I meant nobody in the UK really gives a hoot about football at the Olypics. Now fair enough you might say that's because we don't have a team in it, but the whole country was glued to Euro 2008 with no home nations there.

Surely not?

The inclusion of a Great Britain football team at the London Games has sparked a lot of controversy with the FA's of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland concerned it may compromise their individual status within Fifa.

President of football's world governing body, Sepp Blatter, has said it would be better for GB to enter a team featuring players from just England to avoid such a scenario.

It will be a team of English players.

Laughable really and I can't imagine SAF wanting anything do do with it.

Wait until nearer the time and the English media go into overdrive about this. They will be foaming at the mouth come 2012 and hopefully they get pumped out on pens at the quarter final stage (as usual).

Seriously, what the hell's it got to do with him? What a ridiculous thing to say.

Might aswell not enter a team if it's going to cause such controversy.

Blatter against British 2012 team

Blatter held a meeting with the Scottish FA on Saturday

Fifa president Sepp Blatter says a Great Britain football team at the 2012 Olympic Games should feature only English players.

The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football bodies oppose a GB team in case it affects their Fifa status, while England back the idea.

Blatter now says said the independent status of the four British associations could be harmed by a unified GB team.

"They should enter only a team composed of players from England," said Blatter.

"This will then not provoke a long and endless discussion of the four British associations."

The International Olympic Committee does not recognise separate teams from Britain's home countries.

Olympic qualification has been impossible as it is based on Fifa's under-21 competitions in which the four home nations compete individually.

Blatter was speaking from Gleneagles, Scotland, where the International Football Association annual meeting has been taking place.

The Scottish FA reiterated its opposition to a unified team during a meeting with Blatter on Saturday.

"I said that is the best thing for you to do," said Blatter.

"If you start to put together a combined team for the Olympic Games, the question will automatically come up that there are four different associations so how can they play in one team.

"If this is the case then why the hell do they have four associations and four votes and their own vice-presidency?

"This will put into question all the privileges that the British associations have been given by the Congress in 1946."

Great Britain would have a men's team for the first time since the 1956 Olympics and a women's team for the first time ever.

Can of worms and we're best having nothing to do with it.

I doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson would have anything to do with it. Also Coe must be delusional if he things that Sir Alex Ferguson becoming the manager would cause the various FAs to cease their objections. The idea the Scotland fans will cease their objections is even more silly.

I certainly am going to continue to object to a GB team, irrespective of who the manager is.

Any way I found this link for a petition on the Downing Street web site opposing the Olympic GB team. Probably make no difference but won

Relatively speaking, of course. Seems to have generated a few posts on here...

:dontknow:

Relatively speaking I don't know anyone who's into football ever taking any real interest in the Olympic matches. In fact I couldn't even tell you which teams won the medals at 2004.

This guy is doing my frigging head in. All he ever comes out with is pointless soundbites.

Also, why not a team of just Northern Ireland players, or Welsh players, or Scottish players (although i hope scotland has nothing to do with it).

I think the best way to sort this out is to have a mini tournament before the olympics between the 4 uk under 23 teams and the winner plays as team GB in the olympics.

Everyone that's up in arms about a British team at the Olympics should ask themselves the differnces between the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

Athletes compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth, but GB at the Olympics. No problems there. Football players play for Scotland at the World Cup (qualifiers at least) and GB at the Olympics.

So maybe it wouldn't bring in the abolition of the four separate National sides.
