daytripping
Just bought a new hoose and it needs the works done to it, first job will be to take down a wall and knock through from the kitchen into the dining room and make it a big kitchen/family room, then want a really smart kitchen with Island/Breakfast bar. Been thinking of either Ikea, Howdens or Wren for the kitchen, anyone have any experience of any of those companies? Don't want hard sale salesman coming away with 15 grand then dropping it to 3 when the sale is slipping away, want a company that gives an upfront best price. Link to comment

I'll second this. These are exactly the type of cxnts that you want to avoid. Had to be blunt and tell the guy just to get the f**k out of my house or I'm calling the police after he just sat there refusing to budge (all 20+ stone of him) Magnet did a good job at my folk's house. DonCurlyHorny
I agree Space Kitchens are utter c unts. I used to live in a one bedroom flat in Aberdeen city centre which had a small cupboard for a kitchen. It was useless so thought about getting someone in to see if they could do anything to make more space or maybe extend it into the living area. Just so happens Space Kitchens phoned up out of the blue and I agreed for them to come round and give me a price. Guy turns up, right smarmy beggar, and proceeds to yap about everything bar the kitchen for near on an hour. Anway, 3 hours later I've got a price from him. Link to comment
daytripping
Cheers for the tips so far lads, had a really bad experience with Living Design years ago when they ripped me off with a shoddy overpriced kitchen, would be here all day if I told you the whole story, needless to say it won't happen again! Keep them coming! Will look at the one's pointed out already. Link to comment
DD1903
Who did you end up going with dayts? I'm hopefully moving house in a couple of weeks and need to put a new kitchen in. A couple of folk had mention howdens as being decent, but having read a few reviews they would appear to be shoddy as hell. Anyone got any recommendations. Link to comment
daytripping
We ended up getting one from Ikea, couldn't be happier with it and the price was great. It's a white gloss one with all appliances including dishwasher and washing machine, was around £6000, that was about £4000 cheaper than factory direct in Inverurie and B & Q. The good thing about Ikea is everything has a price tag, I think most of the places just make up a figure to be knocked down later, that's what the place in Inverurie did. They also have a guy in the Aberdeen area who will come round and measure up and design the kitchen, you see it on his computer before you buy, no pressure selling at all. It also had interest free credit, look for offers from them, they sometimes have things like buy 4 appliances but only pay for 3. Everything comes with a 5 year warranty. EDIT; After asking the missus it was actually £5500 and £1500 to fit. Link to comment

daytripping
Do ikea fit it or did u get someone else in to do it. Iv also looked at Ikea and quite impressed! Thinking red gloss but will need to go down and have a proper look! They arrange a fitter if you want, they sorted us out with a teuchter lad that did a brilliant job. We only went down to Edinburgh to sort out the credit, you get a good enough idea from the planner as to what it will look like. Here's the name for the Ikea planning guy in the area, I thought he was brilliant, came in did the design and gave the price, take it or leave it, he wasn't fussed either way, not like the knobs you get coming round who won't leave! Knocking wall between kitchen and living room down is a must first. Kitchen is currently ridiculously small! Been a rental house for 20 years so nothing has been done to it in that time really! All the skirting, doors ext to be replaced and wall paper to be stripped back down to the plaster. Then I'll look into new bathroom and kitchen! Link to comment

I binned the original plan of taking down the wall, the kitchen had a big stone larder and when I knocked that out it made the kitchen look much bigger, it's not huge but it's big enough. Leaving the wall up means I have two big living rooms, one for me and one for her to watch Towie and all that shyte! I'm in the middle of a full house refurb, doors, flooring, skirtings, walls etc, everything takes twice as long as you think it will and costs twice as much, be prepared to be living in a building site for a year! it is worth it though, I'm getting there.......just!! daytripping
My bachelor living room has a 42" 3D telly arriving this week and a new suite ordered and coming in around 8 weeks, I will be in heaven for the footy season starting!! Multi media 3D Blu Ray player is next on the shopping list this week, am thinking I might be able to sneak a bar style fridge under the radar and into the room, If I get that I'm sorted. First house so won't be moving out till atleast the new kitchen and bathroom are in place and the living room is finished! It's exciting but daunting at the same time! So much to do and I don't have a clue where to start? I have 3 massive cupboards separating the kitchen and living area. Unfortnaltey an old boiler is in 1 of them and the other 2 are for storage! The cupboards must go though as the kitchen is far too small, it will be worth it to open it up a bit even though it means putting in a new boiler. Led to believe that boilers are pretty expensive? daytripping
Boilers are not too expensive, getting them moved and fitted is where the cash adds up, you'll get a decent boiler for a grand. I did my house one room at a time, learnt from past mistakes that starting jobs everywhere just makes things get out of hand, I did the bedrooms first then the kitchen, if you can sleep and eat ok yer half way there was my thinking! Don't start a new job till one room is 100% done and dusted. Link to comment

Carpets ripped up, wall paper all striped off, skirting all ripped off, fireplace taken out and bathroom and kitchen furniture all stripped back to start from scratch! I have the luxury of staying at home with parents as its my place of work anyway and that the house is only 1 minute up the road. Link to comment
