The last player we had who could win games single handedly.

Sensational ability.

Of course he was targeted by hatchet men, and was never the same afterward.

Big b*stard Murdoch of Clydebank, sickened me that game, horrifying tackle on Jess just as he was becoming an international star.

He was never quite the player he initially exploded onto the scene as after that.

And the big hun b*stard Murdoch even gloried in it with T-shirts printed etc saying he'd snapped Jess.

He wasn't consistent. That's simple truth. Don't know what brought about this pretty random seeming thread for a circle jerk over Jess...?

He was a shining light in a team of sh*te.

He was more consistant, more talented and our best midfielder in the last 20 years, to argue sums up your knowledge of the club and football in general.

The whole squad was far better then, and he had some excellent support.

Some of the football we played when we demolished Hearts 6-2 at Pittodrie has not been replicated since.

That AFC team would have won the current SPL at a canter.

Paul Mason that day was amazing!!

Ignoring Stoney who is being an argumentative prick, I agree with you.

6-2 is my favourite game I've been too as I've said before on here. The entire team was mesmerising around that time and if brought to now would win the SPL before breakfast.

But over that period, I don't believe Jess was the best we've had in the 20 years. I'd say 2 were better than him. One mentioned, Bett, another in the 6-2, Shearer. Both consistently gave better to the team than Jess did, even though Jess was able to have those magnificent repeated one-off (hmm) moments.

The huge difference then being that young players had a support structure of excellent seasoned pros to show them the ropes, McLeish as well of course.

And the fans really gave the young players full backing.

Now we just have tools who want instant gratification populating the stands, not everyone I hasten to add, but a very vocal mob, meaning anyone with ability leaves as soon as that ability starts to bear fruit.

No he wasn't. As I already said Jim Bett was better.

Not in the last 20 years he wasnt.

in the 80s certainly 197 games and 32 goals which is better than most strikers.

Struggled in 93 - 94 and only played 23 games in those two seasons

Infact from 91-94 played 61 games but only scored 1 a far cry from his form in the 80's

And certainly no where near as consistant as jess during that time.

Your stats are meaningless.

Bett was a brilliant player, and the main reason we had the title decider at Ibrox in 91, after our run of 11 or 12 wins in a row after Gilhaus' last minute winner against the hun at Pittodrie in March 91.

He didna need to get forward so goals are irrelevant, his passing was absolutely sublime, and he rarely if ever wasted a ball.

Every team needs a player like that. He had calibre, which is immeasurable.

I agree but that is over 20 years ago!!

We've never had a midfielder like that since.

And some of the excuses we've had in there, Ray McKinnon, Paul Kane, Hetherston, Guntveit, Darren Young ( ), etc etc etc.

All of them, by comparison, useless.

jess didnt acheive the heights he possibly could have inho, if the ball went to his feet he could play some blinding passes but make him run for it he appeared to lose interest.

good player with vision yes, great player no

He was great, world class, until he had his leg snapped.

After that, never the same in my opinion. Something went from his game, a fear factor crept in, and he held a little back.

More of an indictment on the brutality of Scottish football than anything else it has to be said.

Eoin Jess was a very good player, but to say he was world class is nonsense.

The type of hyperbole banded about all too easily these days :blahblah1:
