It's all a bit creepy. Geeky as well I might add.

Pesky IT folk at work normally just consult Google if you ask them anything anyway.

Charlatans.

To get a bit geeky, you can insert meta tags to the site or have a robots.txt file in the root directory of the site which requests that search engines don't index the site, meaning a site does not appear in a search engine at all.

In fact, the majority of the internet is like that, and it's call the Deep Net, or Invisible Web because you can't find them on the surface or visit them by normal means. The deep web is many thousand times bigger than what you can see via search engines, and nor are they accessible by normal means.

In 2000, it was estimated that the deep Web contained approximately 7,500 terabytes of data and 550 billion individual documents. Estimates based on extrapolations from a study done at University of California, Berkeley in the year 2000, speculate that the deep Web consists of about 91,000 terabytes. By contrast, the surface Web (which is easily reached by search engines) is about 167 terabytes

You have to use Tor to access them. This is where the f*cked up shit on the internet is, sites such as child porn, assassination sites, drug order services and where Chinese dissidents hang out, and possibly terrorists. Scary stuff.

Which weirdly takes me back onto the subject of books.

Finished this two weeks ago. Ace book and references the hidden web that you speak about a fair bit. :thumbup1:

The Leopard

Now how would one get access to "Invisible Web or Tor" sites. (For reference purposes and the assassination and drug order sites specifically)

Well, even then you can't, not unless you were given the specific address. But there is a site called "The Hidden Wiki" which can only be accessed via tor and is essentially a list of links to those services. Do a google search and you should find screenshots of it.

Tor, if anyone doesn't know is an anonymous proxy, that bounces your connection around the world to hide your identity. It was created with the help of the U.S Navy and meant to help those in brutal regimes communicate, such as those in China. The CIA runs a tor node apparently.

What Jo Nesbo has written is spoiled a little by the advertisement saying he's the next Steig Larsson that's plastered over every book. The books are not similar in style in my opinion.

If I was an author I'd rather sell books on my own accord than have people buy it because they think I'm like someone else.

Eh doubt that crosses his mind when he looks at his bank balance thanks to Larsson.

Interesting stuff. I'm not going to click any of the screenshots as I imagine there will be quite a few viruses lurking there or thereabouts.

Oh and shift the posts about books in this thread into Books when you can please. :thumbup1:

:poster_oops: I already did. I didn't think about that, but then I am a woman and technophobe.

Very interesting stuff indeed, I had Firefox already to go but then I had to go into work. I may give it a go tonight. Bebo - have you got it? Might need your help via Twitter

You can't get viruses from images. I mean, theoretically you can, but no, just no.

Here's a screenshot of the hidden wiki that you can find by just using google images.

Try not to throw up in your mouth. Link

Use chrome instead. I'd use chrome but i need firefox with all its add-ons, which would be no use to you.
